Application aware backup - SQL - sql agent cannot start

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have a computer running windows 10 pro 64 bit and sql server 2008 R2.

I have installed acronis backup standard 12.5.

I am backing up the entire PC with acronis and I just want to know whether I need to have the application aware backup feature enabled in order to do a reliable restore of the SQL database?

The reason I ask is because when I try to enable it I get an error - sql agent cannot be started.

If I don't need this feature enabled I will leave as is, otherwise I need to diagnose the underlying problem.

Thanks

For the record, when I try to turn on application aware backup I get the error - agent for sql is not installed.

Although when I look in administrative tools>services I do see sql server agent. I noted that it was disabled so I also tried enabling it and then starting it - after which I received a notice saying it started and then stopped. And then once again I tried enabling application aware backups in acronis, but still received the same error - agent for sql is not installed.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

Is this SQL Server 2000 R2 Full or Express?

If it is Express then the Agent is not a supported component, it will be installed and disabled, but it will not start if started manually.

Thanks for the reply cw1972, how can I actually confirm whether or not its express? I did check in add remove programs and it is listed just as sql 2008 r2 - it does not mention express.

Also, if it is express, what are the implications? I noted somewhere in the acronis knowledge base it says that it does support express versions of SQL, so does that mean the database will still back up without issue?

If you open SQL Management Console, connect to your instance, right click on the root of the instance, choose Properties / General / Product - my express instance say "Microsoft SQL Server Express (64bit)"

Acronis 12.5 does support backing up express, I have a few instance backing up.

My main backup plan is not application aware so I don't get the option to restore an individual database.

Just created a test plan to backup just the SQL Databases which succeeded and I was able to select individual databases.

I do have the Acronis Agent installed on that server though.
