Pause backup job if VPN workstation not connected to local LAN...

Thread needs solution

Hi,

We have multi-offices all connected via VPN. Some of our workstations (the laptops of the business owners) are included on a regular 'workstation' backup through our AB12.5 management server. However, some of the VPN connections are not very quick and, as a result, these remote workstation backups can appear to freeze and hog the bandwidth of the remote office.

I need a way of running a pre-task command that would check to see the IP address of the workstation checking in and, if that IP address was not of the local LAN then the backup process would not run as scheduled. The backup would run again once the workstation was returned to base, i.e. back on the local LAN.

Any way of doing this?

Cheers

Neil

Hi Neil,

In the latest Update 2 release (builds #8610 or higher) of Acronis Backup 12.5 there were several new scheduling options added and the "Check device IP address" should be the one you need:

StartConditions.PNG

Thank you.

I appreciate that this thread is quite old now, but I'm revisiting as the setting shown has no effect on the schedule.

A remote machine on an IP range outside of the specified acceptable 'internal range' still performs to backup.

Using 12.5.9010 on the server, though the agent on the workstation in question is 12.5.8850. Is this the issue?

Cheers

Neil

Hi Neil,

The agents should be updated to the same build as Acronis Management Server in general, however this scheduling functionality should not depend on the build number as long as it's higher than 8610 (starting from which this functionality is available). In your case I'd recommended to update the agent to 9010 build and if it doesn't fix the problem, then contact our support team for assistance.

P.S. There are no known opened issues related to IP ranges scheduling conditions - these scenarions have been specifically tested in our QA lab before the release.

Thank you.

Reviving this old thread.

If I have remote PC's connecting via VPN, will Acronis be checking the VPN internal IP?  Or will it be checking at the client side, thus showing the remote client PC IP from the remote network?

Hello Brandon,

thank you for posting your question!

Acronis software uses Windows/Linux API for communication with remote PCs. It will use the address that is specified in the backup task for this machine. It does not matter whether you specify the VPN internal IP or the remote client PC IP. Acronis software should be able to resolve this address (it should be accessible) from Acronis Management Console.
