Hard Disk recognization failure by Boot Media

Thread needs solution

We have purchased Dell PowerEdge T110 Machines installed with Windows Server 2008. These has a RAID Controller Dell PERC S100. The Machines are using physical RAID 5. The RAID volume is using dynamic disk configuration. We have created two boot media for ABR-10 workstation, One Linux based & other WinPE 3.0. Both are integrated with RAID controller driver, here is what happening.

The Linux based BootCD recognizes 4 Hard Disks physically present in RAID array but does not recognizes RAID/Volumes.

The WinPE based BootCD does not recognizes anything at all.

Please tell me what is wrong. So that I may become in position to convince management to purchase License for the Trial Version Software.

Hello Amjad,

Thank you very much for posting and welcome to the forum. I will definitely help you with this issue.

It appears that the BootCD lacks the proper drivers to detect your RAID Controller. The fastest way to get this problem resolved would be to contact our Support team with this report.

We provide technical support for trial versions during the trial period.

Please let me know if you have additional questions and I am very sorry for the inconvenience.

Thank you.

Hi there:

I am having the same issue - using Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 (build 10.0.13544) and while I can boot from the ATI Server CD I created, with the PERC S100/S300 Controllers, when I attempt to restore from my test image, the physical drives (3x 250GB HD in a RAID 5 setup) show up separately rather than the in the RAID Volume.

Dell PowerEdge T110 Server
4GB RAM
RAID 5
Windows 2003 SP2 32bit

Let me save you both lots of time here. Contacting "support" will do nothing but waste your time. Dell's drivers are not open so they are not included on the boot media for Linux. You need to build the PE media version of the boot media.

You need the WAIK for this, go here. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5753 The PE builder will not work with out it.

Download the PERC drivers from the dell website and either inject them into the image during creation or after you boot into PE.
There is a handy "Load driver" button in PE. Load the driver and the RAID array will show up properly.

Hi there:

Thanks for the info - I'll give that a shot and see how it goes.

Thanks!

You will need to use the WinPE media… Also when including device drivers ensure you are using the correct drivers for the OS/WinPE environment… Eg, if you are using the Windows Automated Installation Kit 3.0, this is a Windows 7/2008 R2 Kernel so ensure you use the Windows 7/2008 R2 device drivers to be included when making your boot CD.

One you have the right drivers loaded inside your WinPE CD this should fix the issues you have run into with the Dell PERC S100 controller.

P.S. I belive the driver you are after can be found at the following URL: http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?releaseid=R294…
Please check this is correct, and note you will need to extract the drivers for WindowsPE to be able to use/install them!

Hi there:

I must be doing something wrong - I downloaded the WinPE 2.1 and the Windows 2009 R2 RAID S100 drivers, but when I boot off from the WinPE CD the drives (this time) don't show up at all.

Does anyone have a bootable CD using WinPE and Acronis that sees the SC100 RAID controllers?

Thanks!

Hi John

I would recommend download the WinPE 3.x install files as this is based on Windows 7 (2008 R2). The WinPE 2.x is based on Windows Vista (2008) so if the RAID drivers you have don't work on this version of Windows this could be the cause of your troubles perhaps.

If you uninstall 2.x and re-run the Acronis boot CD creation wizard will give you links to the download page for AIK 3.0 or you get also find quick links in the ABR11 product manual along with some instructions at the following URL: http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/ABR11/index.html#1220.html

I would also suggest contacting Acronis support if you run into too many more issues as I’m sure they will be able to help out with this CD creation on the phone/via live chat with might be more convenient for you.
