Full backups why does the previous full back up disappear when I make another full backup?

Thread needs solution

I am running Windows 10 with the latest updates. I have Acronis True Image 2018. I only want to make "complete" full backups so if necessary I can fully recover my computer to an earlier date if I have too. In the past I was able to make a "full" backup and each one would be listed in my list of backup. For some reason this no longer works. Example I made a full validated backup file on May20. It did show in my list of backups for my computer. If I then make a new full validated backup on May 21st I no longer see the backup from the 20th in my list of backup. I am not allowed to "add the existing backup May 20th" to the list even thought if I look at the files on this external hard drive I can see the file as well as several others. If Acronis has done something that will not let you have more than one full backup file to select for recovery to different dates it is no long a useful piece of software to me. If I am not selecting the correct steps to do what I want to do with backups please tell me what I am doing wrong so I can correct it.

Please post screenshot of your application GUI showing your backup task.  It sounds like your external drive is changing drive letters between backups.  If so then when you tell the app to Add existing backup that fails because the app cannot find the changed drive letter because it is no longer attached.

You can check this out by opening the location of existing backups on your external drive, click on one to select it, then right click on it and select Properties.  Look for Location in the General tab and see what the drive letter shows for that file.  Check others the same way to see if they are different.

Well, not quite what I was looking for but these are telling all the same.

Your Properties window shots show that Windows File Association has changed or been corrupted for the Acronis True Image .tib file type.  This is indicated by the line in the properties window named Open with, in your case, editpad.exe.

This means that the default application to open your backup files is now editpad, not True Image.  This may well be the cause to your issue.

For help on correcting this issue look HERE

Fix this issue and see it the behavior of True Image gets fixed.

Just one thought on this question.  When you create a full backup via the Acronis True Image GUI then you have created a backup task which will manage that backup.  Unless you have specified to use the Single Version backup scheme for your task, then your older backups will still be present, which is as you have indicated by saying that you were not able to add these as existing backups to your backup task.

This is all correct operation, and the Activity page for your backup task should clearly show you that your new backups have been created too.

What you need to do now, is to open the Recovery page using the option at the top of the right panel, then expand the list of dates shown for your recovery options.  Each date shown in this list will correspond to one of your full backup files, allowing you to recover back to those points in time.

See the screen shots below from my own full backup task.  Note: the number of dates shown on the Recovery page will match your settings for how many backups to store before any automatic cleanup is applied.  In my case I only keep 3 full backups for this task shown in the screen shots.

Here are two images from my computer. The first shows that these files were "full". The second is what my activity tab shows. There is no listing for my disk F where these files are located. If I could figure out why would probable help.  Also when I changed the *.tib files to associate with acronis.exe not sure what you wanted it associated with? Sorry to be so dumb but need to be lead a bit here.

Thanks for you time I really appreciate it.

Thanks for the screen shots, what I see from these is that your backup files are in 2 different places on your F: drive.

Your COMPUTER_ROOM backup task in the ATI GUI has got F:\5_21_2018 set as the Destination location, but your Activity page  shows that you have added in other backups for this same task from the F:\My backups\5_2_2018 folder on the same drive.

When you look at the Recovery page for this backup task in the GUI - click on the arrow at the right side of the date box shown, and you should see further dates that correspond with the other backups for this task.

Thanks for the private message sent earlier.  If you aim is to do only Full backups, then perhaps the best thing would be to create a new backup task for this purpose, leaving your current backups in place until you know that you do not need them.

For your new backup task, select your Source data then set a unique Destination where to store the backups (keep this different to your existing backups, i.e. create a new folder on your backup drive for this), then finally click on Options to set the finer details.

Set any Schedule for your backup task on the first page.

On the Backup Scheme page, choose as shown in my screen shot below, though you may want to adjust the value for 'Store no more than X recent version chains' to match how many full backups your backup drive has the capacity to hold when counting X+1 full backups.

Set up the Notifications, Exclusions and Advanced pages as needed for your backup task, then when ready (with the Destination drive connected), click on the Back up now button to start the backup task.

Once you have a successful full backup created, and are confident that this is good to use for recovery if needed, then you can remove the old/unwanted tasks from the ATI GUI by using the Delete option.  You will be asked if you want to just delete the settings or the settings and files.  If you need to free space on the destination drive, then delete both, otherwise, delete just the settings then you can delete the unwanted backup files using Windows Explorer at a later date without having any impact on ATI.
