Naming & accessing backups; Adding Diff to Full backup; Backup process stops.

Thread needs solution

In Acronis TrueImage 2014:

1. I can no longer open (see contents of) a .tib file with Windows (File) Explorer (as I used to be able to do).
Also, will not do a Verify (I right-click on a tib file and select "Verify" but nothing happens).

2. How to use the Name boxes:
    a. In "Local Storage / Browse..."  it seems to want a location (folder) but the box is labeled "Filename" and there are options to add %user% etc which are additions to a filename, not a folder.  So, do I select a FILE name or a FOLDER name in the Browse box?
    b. In "Settings / Backup name:"  how does this differ from the "Local Storage" entry?
    c. Unclear of exactly what I get with %user%, %task%, %exec%, etc.
    d. How to get a display of exactly what the full path/filename of the backup will be?

3. Won't do a Diff backup method, even when I set the settings for Diff - it does a FULL backup instead.
I want to add a Diff bak to an existing Full bakup (on a different HD). (see Qn #2.)

4. Backup process often (but not always) stops, saying it can't find the target (the one it's been backing up to for several hours!).  "Retry" immediately gives me the same error msg.  When I cancel, Windows File Explorer shows a resulting .tib file with an appropriate file size.

Welcome to these User Forums.

If you are no longer able to use the Windows Shell integration with Explorer to open or validate your .tib files, then you will probably need to do a Repair install of the ATI application.

A repair is done by reinstalling ATI 2014 over the top of what you already have installed.  You can download the full ATI 2014 installer from your Acronis Account downloads page.

I can only direct you to look at the ATI 2014 User Guide for help on using special values with file names as it has been a long time since I had access to using that version and a lot has changed in the GUI since it was available.

You haven't mentioned what version of Windows OS you are using ATI 2014 with, but if this is Windows 10 then please understand that this is an unsupported combination as only ATI 2015 or later is supported by Acronis when installed on Windows 10.  Older versions of Windows should work fine with ATI 2014.

Thanks for your helpful answer. (I didn't check back sooner b/c I was waiting on the email notification, which never came.)

I did a reinstall and some of the problems are fixed (I can view backup contents now). Have not gotten around to checking other problems yet.

BTW, I'm using ATIH 2014, on a Dell Inspiron 3847 desktop computer, running Win8.1.
The Backup target is an external USB-connected hard drive.
At night, I usually Shut Down (or occasionally Hibernate) my computer.

Now there are new problems, maybe related or similar to my original ones:

After studying the User Guide as you recommended, I decided to try the NonStop Backup feature.  It set up well and started.  But it won't STAY started...

I get a popup message from the Taskbar saying that NonStopBackup is Stopped.
When I Right-click on the systray icon and pick Start, it seems to start but immediately reports that it is stopped.
I opened ATIH and started the NonStopBackup there, and it seemed to start calculating, but then stopped.
All the while, the Windows Task Manager shows that the afcdpsrv service is Running.

The Time Explorer Storage folder (on the external USB-connected hard drive target) shows a folder (named BF281ACA...) containing 922 items (as follows):
an ATI Backup Archive         (0 KB) dated 5/29/18 (probably the date that I set up the NonStop Backup),
    cdp.data                 (1,048,576 KB) dated 5/30/18,
    cdp.metadata              (91,276 KB) dated 5/29/18,
    cdp.metadata_backup (91,276 KB) dated 5/29/18,
    cdp2.data                (1,048,576 KB) dated 5/29/18,
    cdp3.data                (1,048,576 KB) dated 5/29/18,
    cdp4.data                (1,048,576 KB) dated 5/29/18,
          etc. thru...
    cdp917.data            (1,048,576 KB) dated 5/29/18,
    config.xml                              (1 KB) dated 5/29/18,
    image.data                 (533,548 KB) dated 6/14/18 (todays date).

I see no Daily or Weekly Backups (Incremental or Differential) in the Time Explorer Storage folder, even though I set up the NonStop Backup over 2 weeks ago, and have created/modified at least 20 user files (+ daily emails and web bookmarks) and had the computer on almost every day.

My Questions:
      1. IS the NonStopBackup really working?
      2. How can I know for sure if it's working?
      3. Why do I not see the Daily & Weekly bcakups?
      4. If it's NOT working, how do I GET it to work?

Thanks again,

KW

KW, thanks for your update and further information.  Glad that the repair install looks to have solved the original Windows integration issue with opening / viewing contents of .tib files.

Non Stop Backup does work and is used by others but is not a feature that I use myself - I do not have the need for such a continuous backup process.  I have one computer that runs a daily backup to an external USB drive which is the closest I get to NSB.

Please see KB 32417: Acronis True Image: Troubleshooting Nonstop Backup which may be of help to you.

Another point to check is the Power settings related to your USB external drive, Windows tends to default to enabling selective suspend for USB devices which can put the drive to sleep!
