Can I safely backup running Virtual Machines on the host?

Thread needs solution

I know I can use True Image to safely backup a running system, including any open files. Does that also apply to Virtual Machines files?. In other words, when I create a backup of my host while any number of VM's are running, will I be able to restore a complete and valid VM from the resulting backup?

I wouldn't count on it. TI doesn't know what state the VM is in and it can't lock anything internal to the VM. Would you just turn off the host computer while the VM's are running? It's kind of the same thing. It's much better to backup the VM files when the VM is off or to backup from the VM.

You may want to place the VM files onto their own partition so they're separate from any normal host backup partitions.

Thanks for the reply. What you say makes sense. I'll keep creating my images from within the VM's then.
