True Image 2018 cannot verify or mount 2016 images

Thread needs solution

I just installed 2018 and opened Windows Explorer to verify old images.  NOTHING CAN BE VERIFIED!  Even a single file archive gives the message that "Volume 1" cannot be found!  What use is Acronis if I can't access my old archives (disk images)?

Given the way the verification process works you should not be seeing this.

Were all your backup tasks imported from the ATI 2016 installation? If so, do you have the same problem if you attempt to verify files from within ATI itself.

The first thing I would try is re-running the installation. Download the full installation file rather than the web version from your Acronis account. The run the installation file (it is important to use "Run as Administrator", and then when prompted select repair rather than uninstall. This process has been known to correct all sorts of problems. Before trying the verification I would suggest restarting the computer.

Please keep us informed of your progress in dealing with this problem.

Kelly, in addition to Ian's comments.  Please share some screen images showing the file names for your ATI 2016 backups.

The message that volume 1 cannot be found is normally caused by files being deleted manually via Explorer when users are cleaning up or making space on their drives.  If the ATI backup task that created those files is still shown in the ATI GUI, then there is also information for the task and all its files kept in the Acronis internal Database which then is out of sync with the actual status of files still present on the backup drive.

Performing a Validation for the backup task via the ATI GUI option, then taking the Ignore (or cancel) option for each missing file reported should help solve this issue.  The alternative is simply to remove the backup task from the GUI but leave the files on the drive.

OK, I may have had a very senior moment regarding the Volume 1, but I still have a MAJOR problem!

I have a 4TB WD NAS that I have MANY backups stored on.  I made single images at major change points (i.e. upgrade from Win7 to Win 10, and created separate full backups with incremental backups on a schedule.

I have tried the context menu validate option and tried validating from the ATI GUI.  Almost immediately it shows a red X which, when I click on it, says "Backup is corrupted."

EVERY ONE OF THE BACKUP FILES is said to be corrupt by ATI!  I am an electrical engineer, and I know enough about hard drives that this statistically cannot happen without some type of disk error being generated.  This drive has never had a disk error.  S.M.A.R.T. and WD diagnostics all indicate a healthy drive.  What use is Acronis if the backup images are corrupted so easily?!?!?

I have attached a screen shot showing my backup file names.  Can you please help?

Assuming for the moment that there is not anything seriously wrong with your 4TB WD NAS, one would not expect this sort of thing to happen. My understanding is that the verification process basically compares the checksum recorded in the *.tib files to the one generated by the validation process. So it could be that somehow there has been a change made to the files that cause the checksum to differs, but why this would happen escapes me. I doubt that it would be caused by any encryption added by the WD NAS - I do not see this with my Synology NAS. It may help us in understanding what is going on if we had the model number for the WD NAS. Is it being accessed by Ethernet or wifi? The more information the better.

Hopefully the backups are not corrupt. The next thing I would try is to uses the ATI 2016 recovery media to see if you get the same results. You can download the recovery media for ATI 2016 from your Acronis account.

PS In the many years I have been using Acronis I have not seen anything like you are experiencing, and I do not recall similar problem being mentioned on ATI forums. So, what we are seeing here is both unexpected and unusual.

Kelly, please download the MVP Log Viewer tool (from the Community tools link below) and check for the log files that should be created when doing a validation.

What happens if you try to either Mount your backup images to a drive letter, or explore the contents of the images via the options in Windows Explorer?

Your screen image does show some issues where files with -2.tib name endings are shown which suggests that either a problem occurred during the backup or you already had another file with the same name present.

OK - good news - but first, THANK YOU IMMENSELY for pointing me to the log viewer!  Here is what I found for every attempt to validate:

Error 0x1e50023: Cannot access the path: Y:\K Backup\Win10 Partition.tib

Of course the path changed depending on which volume I was trying to validate.

I added the old WD NAS to the ATI backup configuration and began validating.  It is working on that as I type.

I have been an Acronis user since the early 2000's.  I have skipped a few versions because I saw no reason to upgrade while the version of the day (year) continued to work just fine.  Their interface has gotten MUCH less informative!  Why have the context menu in Windows Explorer if Acronis is not going to access the file via the mapped drive?!?!?  And will not give a useful error message right then?!?

And the ATI interface is anything but intuitive!

OK, now another question.  Ian, you said you have a Synology NAS.  I have a new Synology NAS that ATI cannot see.  The Synology is mapped, and the drive letter is visible, but it does not appear under the NAS devices in ATI.  What do I need to do to make it visible?  I am new to the Synology OS, which does not help.

And thanks again to both of you!

This is a know manifestation with Synology NAS. There have been builds of ATI where Synology NAS are listed under NAS, but I do not recall seeing it in recent times (but then I have not configured a backup to NAS for some time). While it does not appear under NAS it is often shown under Network. Just check with mine and it is not being shown, but then Windows is not seeing it either! Both see the 3GIG USB HDD attached to my ASUS Router as a NAS.

There is a way around this annoyance, you manually add the destination as at the top of the dialogue box (see image below):

SynologyNAS.jpg

If you click on the > at the right hand side you will be prompted for NAS credentials.

Rather than using the device name you can use the IP address of the NAS.

As an aside, which it can be useful to map NAS Drive many of us prefer not to do so as an abundant caution security precaution.

Hope this helps

Ian

PS I am sure that windows was seeing the NAS the other day.

That worked perfectly.  Thanks for your help!  Believe it or not, I paid for my BSEE by doing IT work - but that was back in the early 90's.  Things have changed a lot since then, and my job now involves managing people, not networks.  I still manage my home network, but it is a very simple network hidden behind a solid firewall.  Maybe not bulletproof, but my network is far from the low hanging fruit that most home networks are.

Thanks again!!!

Glad that we could be of assistance!

Ian

Ditto to Ian above, also the advice on getting the Synology NAS to show.  I do not map any drive letters to my Synology NAS for security reasons, but it does show up in the ATI GUI though may need a little prompt by using \\NAS-name or \\192.168.0.29 etc.  ATI uses the Apple Bonjour service for network discovery and this should also be enabled on the Synology NAS too.
