ATI 2018, ATI 2017 Encryption Password stops working

Thread needs solution

I have been encrypting backups on ATI 2017 (Desktop) and ATI 2018 (Laptop) for several weeks. Up until now I have been able to look into the backups, and even did one recovery on my desktop.

Suddenly my password has stopped working on almost all my backups. This is true whether I try and go into the backup using File Explorer, or whether boot up from rescue Media and try and use a backup.  This is the case with both my computers and ATI 2017 or ATI 2018, and whether the backup is located on an external USB drive (2 different WD Passport drives) or my internal secondary hard disk.

Have tried to make new backup schemes with different passwords but though the password works initially it eventually fails.

Right now I am creating new backup schemes without encryption as an safety measure and I assume that will work, but I do want to encrypt my backups.

Have looked on the forum but cannot find a similar thread.

Any advice would be appreciated.

It is impossible to change the encryption password, so I do not know what is happening. One possibility I would check is the layout and language of keyboard being used. It may have changed.

Some years ago I had a PC that shipped with UK English (rather than US English) version of windows - I think it was Windows 8. [In Australia we use US English keyboard layout.] It caused havoc until I worked out what the problem was. The PC still thinks it has UK Windows 10 installed, but now remembers my language and keyboard settings.

IanL-S,  Thanks for your thoughts.  I've also had some weird keyboard faults in the past, but this does not appear to be an example of that.

To all readers:  I am still investigating the parameters of this issue.  Not sure I have a handle on the question yet, so I can't expect an answer.

There were two encrypted Desktop backups (ATI 2017) that consistently failed to respond to the password, so I gave up on them and deleted them (by way of booting from rescue media).  All other desktop and laptop backups, both encrypted and unencrypted are now readable.

I suspect this may have something to do with a recovery I performed on the Desktop.  The Desktop was functioning well except on July 17th I foolishly allowed a  FujiXerox technician to take remote control to try and setup a driver for the printer that worked fully with Windows 10.  Instead I lost even the minimal printing function I had (printing by way of USB connection to router).

To try and regain some printing function, on July 21st I recovered to backup from July 16th.  The backups (now deleted) that would not respond to password were from July 12th and July 21st (just prior to recovery).

Will have to wait and see if encrypted backups  continue to work from this point on.  I suspect I still have a problem.

Thanks for the update. Hopefully all will go well in the future.

IanL-S,

I should have listened to you at the beginning.  It WAS a keyboard defect.  I thought I had tested the password and access to the backup files on both computers, but apparently, although I tested backup files for both computers, all the testing was on my Desktop - with an intermittent sticky key defect.

Thanks for your advice.  All resolved now.  I find keyboards often start to go funny after a few years- this is my fourth in 10 years (maybe LogiTech is not the way to go).

BTW, you make reference to Australia.  I am currently in Perth (my home for the last 32 years) but I spend most of the year over in Melbourne.  Originated in the New York in a past lifetime.

Thanks again.

Glad that you managed to sort it out. I am originally from Sydney but have been in Melbourne for over 30 years.
