Restoring files to a different installation of Windows on the same computer

Thread needs solution

ATIH was used to backup the entire SSD on a Windows 10 PC. All data was stored on an NTFS volume.

I'm going to erase the SSD and reinstall Windows 10 on the same PC. This means the computer and user account will have different SIDs.

The only thing I care about restoring are Steam game related directories and files.

The last time I restored data from a different installation of Windows to the same computer, the files were there for a moment and then they disappeared. I presume this was due to different security principals assigned to the restored data.

How do I restore data from a different installation of Windows to the same computer ?

You can retain security settings for files and folders backups using the Advanced Options settings.  You can recover these settings or choose to inherit current security settings upon recovery.

Here is an excerpt from the documentation explaining this in more detail:

  • 5.7.5 File recovery options
Location: Recovery options > Advanced > File recovery options
  • You can select the following file recovery options:
  •  Recover files with their original security settings - if the file security settings were preserved during backup (see File-level security settings for backup (p. 69)), you can choose whether to recover them or let the files inherit the security settings of the folder where they will be recovered to. This option is effective only when recovering files from file/folder backups.
  •  Set current date and time for recovered files - you can choose whether to recover the file date and time from the backup or assign the files the current date and time. By default the file date and time from the backup will be assigned.
