Total Image 2018 blocking my GPU driver installation.

Thread needs solution

My PC was doing great so bought a new fast M.2 drive for windows.
The morning I got a message saying my GPU had a new driver, so I downloaded and installed it.
Later wanted to clone the drive to my new M.2 drive. So bought ATI 2018
That worked great.
A day later had no problems but noticed my GPU had no control panel.
I reinstalled the driver, but as the driver installs new, the monitor goes off and doesn't come back on. Then the PC reboots with no driver installed. Every time I go to install it turns off the monitor and reboots.
To test which program is causing this.
I got a spare SATA 3 disk and installed Windows 10 Pro 1803 onto it.
I then install the driver. All ok
Install ATI2018, and the driver cannot install.
Did this three times
Even installed ATI2018 1st  before GPU driver and still fail.
If I uninstall ATI2018, I still can't install the driver.
Please help.

Mimi, welcome to these User Forums.

The only key feature of ATI 2018 that is likely to cause the issue that you are describing is the Acronis Active Protection service which is intended to block malicious applications and ransomware.

You can try using the option to 'Turn off Acronis Active Protection' by right-clicking on the AAP icon shown in the bottom task bar area (icon looks like a shield with the letter 'A' on a blue background).

See KB 60193: Acronis True Image 2018: Active Protection blocks legitimate applications  for further options for telling AAP to allow your GPU software application / installation.

You wrote:  If I uninstall ATI2018, I still can't install the driver.

The only reason why this might be true is if ATI 2018 wasn't fully uninstalled or some Acronis services were still active, i.e. the AAP service itself.

You should ensure that you have restarted the computer after uninstalling ATI 2018 and if there are still Acronis services shown in the Services page for the Windows Task manager, then please download and run the Acronis Cleanup tool (link in my signature below).

Thanks for that reply, I did try turning it off and it still blocked the driver. Will look at that link and follow your steps.

Mimi,

Was this driver update presented to you by Windows Update feature?

Sure sounds like it was and as such the driver could well be wrong for your machine.

I would recommend having a look in Windows Device Manager at the Graphics, Driver tab and making note of the driver version number, date, and manufacturer.

Next, I would choose the option to roll back the driver.  This will revert the driver back to the previous installed version.  That should temporarily fix the issue for you.

Next, visit your machine manufacturer support site and check there for a newer driver.  If a newer version is found you can download and install it.

All fixed by putting rundll32.exe onto whitelist of active protection.

My GPU driver (398.82) was downloaded from nvidia.co.uk

After rundll32.exe was allowed I installed the driver ok.

Thanks for all your help.
