No access to backup files after Laptop migration

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I made a full backup of my computer. Verification was fully ok.

A week ago the computer was migrated to a new domain and I got a new user account.

Now I am not able to access files from my last backup. Mostly those under C:\Users\OldUserAccount.

Question: How is it possible to create a backup without security which allows access from different PCs and with different Windows accounts. OR How can I access files which were made by a different windows user?

Thank you

What do you mean that " the computer was migrated to a new domain"?

If you mean that you have a new computer and you are trying to recover user files from a backup from your previous computer to the new one which has a different user account then you must instruct the file recovery to not carry over security settings.

The above happens only when the Option to retain File level security is set during the backup process of a File and Folder backup as found in the documentation and pasted below:

  • Location: Options > Advanced > File-level security settings
  • This option is only available for file-level backups.
  • You can specify security settings for backed up files:
  •  Preserve file security settings in backups - selecting this option will preserve all the security properties (permissions assigned to groups or users) of the backup files for further recovery.
By default, files and folders are saved in the backup with their original Windows security settings (i.e. permissions for read, write, execute and so on for each user or user group, set in file Properties -> Security). If you recover a secured file/folder on a computer without the user specified in the permissions, you may not be able to read or modify this file.
To eliminate this kind of problem, you can disable preserving file security settings in backups. Then the recovered files/folders will always inherit the permissions from the folder to which they are recovered (parent folder or disk, if recovered to the root).
Or, you can disable file security settings during recovery, even if they are available in the backup. The result will be the same.

If the above is the case then you can recover the files without the Security settings so that they will inherit the new settings where they are recovered to by following the steps below:

  • Location: Recovery options > Advanced > File recovery options
  • You can select the following file recovery options:
  •  Recover files with their original security settings - if the file security settings were preserved during backup (see File-level security settings for backup (p. 69)), you can choose whether to recover them or let the files inherit the security settings of the folder where they will be recovered to. This option is effective only when recovering files from file/folder backups.

Your welcome :)
