2019 installed fails backup for Drive D:
I just upgraded to Acronis TrueImage 2019 from 2018. All backups were performing correctly before the upgrade. Now backup for Drive D fails. Here's the log, which recurs every time I try to back the drive up:

I went through several steps to ensure that drive D is clean, disk checked for file and bad sector errors. As I said, D was perfectly backed up under TrueImage 2018 up to the day that I upgraded to 2019. Help would be appreciated.

I went back to Acronis 2018 and had a similar thing happen. Before trying to upgrade to 2019 again, I'd like to see if we can figure out what's going on.
Now that I understand there is a "Regular view" in the log viewer, here is what it says for the most recent failure:

Hello William Collins,
Indeed, seems like there is an issue with VSS on your PC. You can try VSS Doctor, maybe it would help to cure it: https://www.acronis.com/en-us/personal/vss-diagnostic-free-tool/
Sometimes rebooting the PC also helps as with a reboot Windows reindexes VSS providers.

William, two suggestions at this point.
- Download & run the free Acronis VSS Doctor tool (link in my signature) to see what issues this detects with your VSS configuration - let it fix any that it can.
- Check your Antivirus logs for any corresponding errors or false positives being found that could give rise to the 'Access denied' error. My reason for saying this is that I am having an issue currently with my Comodo Internet Security blocking a file in my own VSS shadow copy storage when doing a Cloud backup that is giving me "Access denied' errors. Strangely the original file is not flagged up, and local / NAS backups have no issue!

Around 1 a.m. I made the following change based on some research about event ID 8194: https://kb.acronis.com/content/53786. I did the steps under "VSS error 8194 in Windows Event Viewer (access violation issue)."
I then ran backup. It had one halt about 7 minutes from the end of backup, requiring me to "Ignore" in order to finish, which I clicked on this morning at 07:14.
Ran VSS Doctor. It showed me only the errors from yesterday for the 8194 error.
The error that I see in the log viewer is in SnapAPI, with the following repeated several times:
8/27/2018 07:14:42: [SnapAPI][T] Snapshot 02F95408: Read failure status=0x15
Volume 01BA2BA8, sectors [0x3FC04FA8, 0x8], buffer size 0x1000 bytes
I have run chkdsk /r more than once. All of my hard disk diagnostics say the drive has no errors.
Suggestions?

Not sure if the issue I experience are exactly the same but also can't backup my D drive (disk 3) when booting from USB 'Linux' bootable media. I do receive this message "Failed to write to sector '6555896' of hard disk '3'" then I can select Retry, Ignore, Ignore All or Cancel, if selecting Ignore I receive the same message but with another sector address, need to select Ignore All to stop this msg. and then I can backup my C drive I guess.
This happened after upgrading to ATIH 2019 when trying the same on the old version ATIH 2018 thing are working fine.

Run chkdsk /r on all partitions of the drive. Non lettered partition will need to have a temporary drive letter assigned using Windows Disk Management so that they can be scanned as well.
- Log in to post comments

William, CHKDSK can only run against partitions that have been give a drive letter and it is possible that any issues here could be with hidden / system partitions without a drive letter. You have two options here for checking such partitions, one is to allocate drive letters to each partition in turn and then run CHKDSK against it, or alternatively, download and run a dedicated drive diagnostic tool from the drive maker's support site.
Dedicated diagnostic utilities from the disk manufacturers take the longest time to complete the checks, but provide the most accurate methods of checking whether the disk is good or needs replacement:
- Western Digital drives: Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows
- Seagate disks: SeaTools for Windows
- HGST disks: HGST Windows Drive Fitness Test (WinDFT)
- Intel SSDs: Intel Solid State Drive Toolbox
- Samsung drives: Samsung Magician
- ADATA drives: ADATA SSD ToolBox
- Kingston SSDs: Kingston SSD Toolbox, Kingston SSD Manager
- Transcend SSDs: Transcend SSD Scope
- Silicon Power disks: SP ToolBox
- Toshiba disks: Toshiba PC Diagnostic Tool Utility
Per, your error is not the same as the one reported by William in this topic and indicates that there is an issue with your Disk '3' where you are writing your backup to, so again, as with the advice to William, try running a full disk scan with the appropriate disk maker diagnostic tool from the list above or the makers site.

The D drive on my desktop is where I keep all of my documents, photos, etc. Acronis keeps saying it cannot read certain sectors on the D: drive.
So I copied D to drive to E drive. D and E are each Seagate Constellation 1TB drives. I have run various tests on them and all tests pass.
Acronis performed a backup on the E drive with no problems.
Then I switched the drive designations of D and E so that E became D and D became E.
I attempted a backup on the new drive D, but it failed similarly to when the E drive was labeled the D drive, although Acronis could back it up when it was previously designated the E drive.
The log for the new failure on the relabeled D drive is:

This is highly frustrating that whatever is my D drive results in these errors. And it all began after I upgraded to Acronis 2019. Even going back to 2018 did not reverse the issue.

William, the log file is still referring to VSS issues here, so the next suggestion would be to change this in the Advanced Performance Options for your backup task, and go back to using the Acronis snapshot method instead of using VSS and see how that goes?
See KB 59440: Acronis True Image 2017: 'Snapshot for backup' option overview which has details of how to do this change.

I just did a My Files backup from drive D, selecting the folders to back up, rather than the entire drive. This backup almost completed successfully. There was an error at the end..
I will try the Acronis snapshot method for the D drive and see how that works.

Error at the end of the My Files backup. I will try again.

My Folders backup only backed up a fraction of what I told it to back up. It is refusing to back up whole folders of files. It backed up about 20GB of more than 500GB I asked it to back up.

8/28/2018 08:39:48: -05:00 21684 I000B0000: Deleting backup file with path L:\My folders_full_b1_s1_v1.tib.

Bill, lots of the errors in the log are still related to VSS (aka VolumeShadowCopy in the path)
Failed to back up file or folder '\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy10797\Bill\Documents\Financial\Retirement\Medicare Part B\CMS-L564E.pdf'. It may be blocked by another application.
Failed to back up the file. (0x170027)
If the file is being blocked by another application, this may indicate that your security software is getting involved here, so please check any logs that this provides! I mention this because I have been having a similar issue recently where my antivirus identifies a file in the VSS storage as a false-positive malware item and gives a similar error. I have had to disable the antivirus and revert back to using Windows Defender protection while the backup is run. The even more strange aspect of this is that it only happens with backups to the Acronis Cloud - I backup the same data locally & to my NAS and the antivirus is happy to ignore all VSS files!

Thanks, I need to check all my security software logs.
Backup of Drive D using the Acronis snapshot is in process and has not given me any errors yet, so that's looking good.

Backup of drive D using the Acronis snapshot completed without problems. Clearly, there is a corruption or other issue involves with VSS. I didn't find any issues from my security apps blocking Acronis, but I included Acronis's folders as exclusions.

Bill, good to hear that using the Acronis snapshot method allowed the backup to succeed. Some VSS issues seem to be very difficult to diagnose and resolve!

Now that I know about the Acronis Snapshot method, I re-installed Acronis True Image Home 2019.
