Acronis True Image regularly fails to backup to my NAS
Regularly getting messages that backup failed to open, followed by backup is corrupt and can't be opened even though I can find and access the backup file in explorer and I'm regularly manually copying large files to and from this NAS. This is an incremental backup as a full backup takes almost a day and I've no wish to do anything other than incremental backups. Seriously thinking of dumping Acronis and writing a robocopy script instead. Full error details are

Nothing in the KB to give any indication on how to resolve. Workaround is delete the last backup and run incrementally from the previous one but I seem to have to do this on every third or fourth backup. Even if for whatever reason the NAS was down (which I don't believe it has been), I shouldn't be left with a corrupt backup and a failure to automatically create another backup until I've manually intervened.

Hi Steve,
Firstly thanks for the prompt response, log file follows this post. The incremental chain thing is a real concern. I'd be interested to know how a backup becomes corrupt. I doubt that it is the NAS hardware losing data as it is a RAID device with redundant copies of all data on multiple drives. Even then I'd expect dedicated backup software to be able to automatically recover from a failed write rather than leaving a corrupt backup in place that was blocking any further backups until a user manually intervened. This seems like a fundamental flaw and should not happen in any robust backup solution.

Shane, thanks for the log information - taking an edited view of the log file shows:
28/09/2018 21:03:25 :758 Create Backup Archive
From:
To file: \\StartechNAS\SmacL\SHANEAMD-PC\SHANEAMD-PC.tib

28/09/2018 21:03:25 :968 Error 0x13c0005: Operation has completed with errors.
This shows immediately that the error for 'The backup is corrupted' occurs within milliseconds of the backup starting, thus before any data has been written to the NAS for a new backup image file being created.
Please use the option in the ATI GUI for this backup task to 'Open location' and check what files are shown as present on the NAS.
I would recommend trying a Validate for the NAS backup to see what that shows?

Hi Steve,
Tried this and have found that most of my recent NAS backups have failed and that the last incremental file is corrupt and can be neither loaded nor validated. These are weekly backups of big data, with smaller daily backups of critical data to FTP seeming to be ok. I've checked the network share and credentials which are fine, and can manually copy the tib to another location. At this point I've no confidence in Acronis to carry out what should be a very straightforward backup task in a reliable manner and will look for a more robust alternative. It seems fine for the small stuff and has proven useful in cloning drives to upgrade SSDs but I need a backup program that I can trust to work unattended 100% of the time without corrupting my data.

Shane, sorry to hear that the last incremental file cannot be loaded or validated etc. I would suggest manually deleting that one file (SHANEAMD-PC_inc_b1_s19_v1.tib) then retrying the validation or the backup to see if that would allow the latter to proceed?

Hi Steve, that's what I did last time to fix this problem and it worked for a couple of weeks then went corrupt again. Its not really a solution if I have to manually delete backups on a regular basis, and I'm really not interested in having to do full backups as they take too long and need too much space. I'm thinking if I swap over to a robocopy script for the bulk of my data I know its going to work and being file based there's minimal risk of corruption. I'll leave acronis doing the smaller FTP backup and system state.

One last question Shane, what method are you using for the transfer to the NAS? Is this via SMB over the network, or using FTP?
I do regular backups to my own Synology NAS with a mix of Full and Incremental backup tasks and have never had a backup go corrupt on me (to my knowledge).

Hi Steve, the NAS is on wired ethernet LAN, connected via a 1GB router, where the network is on 24/7. Some of the files are big enough, up to about 120gb. I tried the validate again and after ignoring the warnings eventually got this. Given the full backup is 2.1tb and I've a 1 gbps LAN, transfer time here (assuming network speed as the bottleneck) should be about 3 - 4 hours, so no idea what is taking 2d16h here. Can I ask you on your synology NAS how big is your backup and how long does it take? I hadn't done the math before but it looks to me the time taken for my backups is inordinately long here.

Shane, my own network speeds are far less than yours, partially because I am using wireless plus some powerline adapters, plus backup sizes are also smaller - less than 100GB typically.
The estimated time remaining is not Acronis' best indication of the actual time the backup may take and this can change (up or down in estimate!).

Shane,
Your idea to use Acronis only for system images is perfectly fine. This is the kind of backup that requires a proprietary approach. For file backups, I would use some other backup solution that keeps the files flat, in particular if these files don't change too much (video, photos, etc.), are huge (several GB) and/or are already in compressed formats (ZIP, MP4, MKV, etc.). The only problem is when you want to keep easily track of versions and deleted files with retention rules. From that perspective, the built in File History is not too bad, actually.

Hi Pat, I'll give this approach a go and see how it works out. The large files are static and don't need versioning and I use another package (AJC Backup) for automated versioning of the smaller more important files anyway. That said, I'd expect far better error handling and recovery for a program of this nature, failing to backup while leaving corrupt files on backup media that block future backups is about as bad as it gets for a program of this nature. I see in the advanced settings there are options to run commands pre and post the Acronis backup so I'll try adding a RoboCopy command script link in there. Thanks to yourself and Steve for the feedback!

This issue also impacts customers using multiple models of Buffalo NAS, across multiple hypervisors. We get 1-2 corrupt jobs per week using SMB and a 10Gb/s connection.
Acronis needs to address this with a compatibility Patch. Acronis 12.5 & 15.0. as everything we have done with Buffalo to hunt down the issue has turned up clean.
The Auto corruption fix was enabled, and Acronis had told us to turn off all validation as that might cause this error to happen more often.
Piling all of your backups in to one tibx so that you need to start you backup library from scratch to "fix" it is a design flaw in my opinion. The command that can bandaid fix a corrupt backup is also not a reliable fix.

Acronis 2018 has been out of support for about three years, so if it was not addressed in the recent security update build 15560 (08 December 2021) you will either have to upgrade to ACPHO (Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office), the successor to ATI or find another product. You can download a trial version here.
