Do we need a Storage Node?

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I have a question regarding the Storage Node.

Our network contains three physical servers. Two of them are Hyper-V-Hosts with about 10-15 VM´s each. The third server is our Backup-Server with Acronis Backup 12.5.

We plan to back up our servers like this (Disk to Disk to Tape):

1. First we back up the VM´s of our two Hyper-V-Hosts to the hard drive of the Backup-Server. (This is because we want to react as fast as possible if we need to recover data.)

2. We write the backed up VM´s to our tape library. (This is because we store our tapes in a different location.)

My questions are now:

- Is this the a recommend way to do?

- Do we need a Storage Node Server? And if "yes", can we install the Storage Node to the management server (which is our third physical server) or do we need a separate server?

Thanks for helping!

Best regards,

Benjamin

PS: Hope you can understand everything. I´m from Germany :-)

Hi Benjamin,

Welcome to Acronis forums!

The Acronis Storage Node is required to create centralized backups from multiple agents to one or more tape drives. (Basically, this component is only used when multiple machines create backups to a single storage. This is not used for a single machine.)

The tape device needs to be attached to the Storage Node. If you plan to use both tapes and deduplication, the recommendation is to install a separate storage node for each storage as there is no practical limit to the number of storage nodes you can manage with one Management Server and deduplication is a resource-consuming process. So, in your case, if the load is not high and you don't plan to use deduplication, I'd install the Storage Node onto the same physical server with the Acronis Management Server.

Otherwise, an agent can create backups directly to tape. If you have a single or isolated machine and need to create tape backups, attach the drive directly to the machine that has the agent installed.

Hi Ekaterina,

I´ve installed the Storage Node onto the same physical server with the Acronis Management Server. It seems to work perfect.

Thank you,

Benjamin
