How to copy an acronis backup from one ext drive to another

Thread needs solution

I have two acronis backups that I am using regularly. One is a disk image. The other is a daily incremental backup where I back up my "my documents" folder. I have two external drives that I use for this. Drive 1 I want to keep on my desk I want to keep copies of these backups on the second drive which I will keep at a friend's house.

I have tried simply copying the tib fies from drive 1 to drive 2, and that doesn't seem to work properly. What is the correct way to do this?

Not sure why you cannot copy the backup file .... I, regularly, make a backup of one of the drives in "Computer 2" onto an external Sata drive, move the external sata drive to "Computer 1" and copy the backup image to a large Data Only storage point in Computer 1. I have tested that manuver by restoring the "moved image" onto an external sata drive. Reconnecting the external drive to the computer for which the restore was intended and booted to that drive...All was well.... I have tested this method with Win7 64 and Win XP. Should work for you too if the drives are visible and in good health.....

True Image .tib files are just files although they tend to be larger than typical files. A regular Windows Explorer copy can copy them and if you want to be sure the copy worked properly and the copied files are in good shape (no bad sectors) then the TI validate can be used. You may well have done this if you know you have a problem.

Modern USB external drives are normally good - a few years ago it was not difficult to find some USB chipsets that didn't play nice together. You may have a bad cable, possibly a bad chip or a bad drive. Also, try doing the copy with the drive plugged into a rear panel USB connector to remove the extra cable running to the front panel USB connectors.

Some 2.5" external drives which are powered by the USB port can be problematic likely due to inadequate power. When the large files are copied at full-speed for long periods of time the power supplied via the USB port can be inadequate. If the drive has 2 USB connectors be sure to use both of them - the second one is to obtain more power from a second USB port.

A way to test for faithful file transfers without using TI is to select a large file on your HD. It can be a TI tib file. Use a free checksum calculator program and obtain the checksum for the selected file. CRC32 or MD5 are suitable. Record the checksum value.

Copy the file to an external HD. Re-run the checksum calculation on the copy. The value should agree perfectly; if it doesn't then the copy was bad.

Now copy the file from the external HD back to the HD into a different location. Re-run the checksum calculation on this file copy and once again it should agree perfectly. If it doesn't then the reading of the external is likely the problem.

You are likely doing an external to external copy. You can run the test using the 2 externals in the same manner. You may find that it works using the HD but not external to external.

Bad RAM can cause problems and it can make a checksum calculation fail and certainly can make a TI validation fail. If your disk tests reveal anything, run Memtest86+ available free from www.memtest.org . The test should be allowed to run for at least a few passes; an overnight run is best.

Thanks to you and steve for your very helpful comments.

In my post, I said that copying the tib files didn't work very well. Actually, I think the copy went well. I just used windows explorer. I havven't run a check sum yet. I will do that.

For the moment I am assuming that the files copied over OK. When I load acronis TI, the copied tib shows up in the copied from drive, but don't show up in the list for the copied to drive. So I do a "browse for backups". I highlight all of the tib files (it has versions) and press "add to list". It doesn't add it to the list. I am thinking that the database that acronis uses for the windows interface will not allow two backups to be in the list if they have exactly the same name. Have either of you been able to get two backups with the same name, but on different drives to show up in the list?

I ran checksum on the original files and the copied files and they are the same. I have tried everthing I know to get the copied tib to show up on the list and it simply won't work. Copying the tib will work if I boot from the cd. This is fine for images, because If I need to restore an image, I will do that from the bootable cd. But for file backups this is not acceptable. The only way I have found that works is to run the backups from acronis to both disks. Doing that, you can name them the same and both will show up on the list.

Another gripe I have is that if you remove a backup from the list, and then subsequently add it back, it is useful for restore only, not backup.
