Error cloning external drive to another external drive

Thread needs solution

My Dell laptop is failing on boot and when I run diagnostics it telle me I have a failed drive. When I remove it i can still see the files when I hook up via usb to another laptop. I am trying to clone the drive using Disk Director 11 and I get an error "Corrupted file. Use check disk". It does not tell me what drive this is for. If I run check disk on the old laptop drive, won't it make it unbootable?

I'm trying to get away with the simple method. My other choice is starting from scratch with the new drive. Is this my only option now?

Running chkdsk on the drive shouldn't render it unbootable. However, since the drive may be having problems, it would be best to create a backup image of the drive first. Running chkdsk may cause further stress to the drive and increase the risk of failure.

I would assume the error message is coming from the source drive.
