Compression algorithm

Thread needs solution

I have encountered the situation when backing up a single folder and Acronis 11 hangs part way through. I was able to complete the task by rerunning it with NO COMPRESSION specified.

Does anyone know when this "problem with the compression algorithm" might be fixed?

What build of TI 11 are you using? If you're not using the latest build (8,101), it may be worth it to update and try it.

What type of files are you backing up?

Do you know which file or what type of file was actually causing TI to hang?

Since TI 11 is now two versions old, I seriously doubt Acronis will provide any fixes of that type for it.

Running the task without compression changes more things than just omitting the compression algorithm. The load on the processor is reduced, there may be less buss activity, some CPU instructions may not be used, RAM usage is altered, R/W speeds may change, etc.

I doubt that there is a problem with the compression mechanism itself or the forum would have been over-run with such problems.

Try running chkdsk X: /r on the partition containing the problem files. Replace X with the drive letter of the partition.

Thanks to those who have replied. I will attempt to answer your questions ....

Using build 8053. I shall look into installing build 8101

What type of files are you backing up?

The folder I am trying to backup contains a mixture of file types. Please note that I have an IDENTICAL folder on another computer, and Acronis TI11 has successfully backed up this folder using compression many, many times in the past year.

Not really, the subfolder name that appears is present in many of the parent folders.

Could well be. If you look at KB article 1747, that is where Acronis support stated that they had a known problem with the compression algorithm.

See my previous comment re KB article 1747.

I have done this. No change.

Hello Wayne,

Thank you for using Acronis Products

Have you tried to backup the same folder under Acronis bootable disc? Do you encounter the same issue? Let us know the results.

I may also recommend you download free trial version of Acronis True Image Home 2010 and test it.

I have applied build 8101 to TI 11 and the results are the same. In addition, I'm seriously concerned about the operation of differential backups. If I'm failing to understand something, please enlighten me .......

As a test, I created a new folder with three small text files in it.

I then used Acronis TI 11 to create a FULL backup of that folder. No problem so far. Next I created a task to perform a DIFFERENTIAL backup of that folder using the FULL backup as a base. The same three files showed up in the differential even though no changes had taken place to these files in the interim. My understanding is that a differential backup should only contain those files that are "new or changed" from the previous.

What criteria does TI use to determine if a file has been changed?

EDIT: This was previously suggested ... Have you tried to backup the same folder under Acronis bootable disc? Do you encounter the same issue? Let us know the results. Dmitry Nikolaev

An attempt to use the bootable disk resulted in this message ... "E000101F4 Acronis True Image has not found any hard disk drives"

Thanks .... Wayne

It just compares hash values of the files, and creates a backup of changed files. Are you running defragmentation periodically? Also, do you have any encryption software? What is the type of your hard drive?

I have sent you a link to download the ISO file for standalone version, which is based on another loader. Please recreate a CD from it and check the results. It should be able to recognize the hard drives.

Please let us know the results.

Thank you.

Yes, I run O&O Defrag/space periodically. The failing backups have been retried following any defrag.
I do not use any encryption software.
My hard drive is a Western Digital WD WD1001FALS-00J7B1 ATA device. It has a capacity of 1000.20 GB with 177GB used and 754GB free. Single partition C:.
My backups are directed to a Newisys NA-1400 Network Appliance.
