.PST backup fail warning but backup completed?

Thread needs solution

I have my outlook.pst set to do backups daily but keep getting reported that it has failed. I tried to delete and setup again and not change. The odd thing is if I open my backup folder on my WD personal cloud the backups are there and in approximate size as compared to datafile in Outlook 2010.

Also my full system backup works fine.

BTW, great product.

Larry, welcome to these User Forums.

I would recommend downloading the MVP Log Viewer tool (link below) and use this to check the logs for your backup tasks, which should then tell you what errors, if any, have been encountered during the backup process.

With Outlook .PST files, it is best if Outlook is closed when making a backup to ensure the data in the files is not either in use or being locked by the application.

I have tried with OL not running and have same issue. From the logs the first failure started on 9/20/18 and has been OK for over a year. Here's the report.

Larry, the log shows the following successful backup message:

11/6/2018 7:08:51 PM: The following backups have been successfully created: nas://WDMYCLOUD/Larry/Backup/OUTLOOK MAIL/OutLook.PST backup_full_b7_s1_v1.tib

Are you doing a Validation as part of the backup task here, as it is possible that the error in the log is for that action rather than for the backup.

Larry, the only other suggestions at this point would be to verify that the actual backup .tib file is present on your network drive, and to try doing a validation of the same.

Even with verify on or off file backup looks the correct size. Also the same with OL running or not. I now get this warning with verify on.

Larry, what messages are shown in the log for when you see the 'Failed to open data stream' error message?  I suspect that this may be related to automatic cleanup given the earlier errors shown on the Activity page for 'Backup consolidation failed'.

Received from Larry via a PM.

Larry, the log shows that this data stream error is happening when you are combining a backup with doing an immediate validation for the backup on your WD NAS.  I would suggest separating these actions, i.e. either use the option to schedule the validation at another / regular time, or else do this manually.

I would expect that doing a separate validation should also work successfully.  There have been known issues when both are being done together, particularly where the files are on a remote device.

Update, I have validation set to run about 2hrs after .PST file s backup. backup shows successful 2 times. I do have attempts set to repeat 1 on failure 30 minutes later but both show as OK. Now getting this error "Consolidation Failures"

Larry, 'consolidation' in this context means automatic cleanup, so you should check the log file for any further information on the specifics of what error is being encountered?

Here is from 12/7. I removed only the path names but can also post if needed as not sure if that opens my system to outside hacking?

Larry, the only KB hit that I could find for the above data stream issue was for much older versions of ATI going back to 2012, and suggested corruption with the internal database data for the backup.
KB 27618: Acronis True Image Home Errors Out with "Failed to open data stream" on Consolidation

The good news from the log is that the backup is being created successfully on your NAS drive but without automatic cleanup functioning correctly, then the size of your backups will increase!

You could try creating either a new backup task to the NAS, or else using the 'Clone settings' option for this task to create a duplicate task with the same name but prefixed by (1), then try running that task.  Automatic cleanup will only occur after the task has reached the criteria set for cleanup in the task, so you won't know immediately if this has resolved the issue or not?

I upgraded to 2019 since I wanted to add more computers to back up. That said the error issues are gone... so now I/we know where the issue is!

Larry, thanks for the update, glad that ATI 2019 is working for you here.
