True Image blocks on "applying user settings"

Thread needs solution

Hello. I've had a couple of backups that have failed these last few days with a false message concerning a disk that wasn't mounted (it was). Trying to get past that, using just the normal interface I got a parse error after having set something or other and now TI won't start, blocking in the above phase. Is there anything I can do? I've tried repairing the installation, to no avail. Can I delete the backup settings files wherever they are and start afresh? Or what?

The file I've appended indicates an error TI is detecting doing something, I know not what. Maybe important. Maybe not pertinent.

Thanks.

How was the disk mounted; was it USB HDD, eSATA or an internal disk (SATA or M.2)?

One possibility is that either the power cable or SATA cable is failing (internal drive) or the there is a problem with the USB port being used. If USB drive, have you tried a different USB port - backplane of the main board are less problematic that those on the front of the case.

Hopefully someone else will have further insights into this issue.

AllenC, not seen that particular error being reported here in the forums but Ian's suggestions are worth checking out.

Before going on to the steps below, please ensure that you have done a full Windows Restart as that can often resolve some strange issues.  Use Restart not Shutdown & boot as this can often just put the system into a hybrid sleep state and not do a full shutdown of Windows!

If you want to remove the backup and start over with it, then close the ATI GUI (if open), turn off Acronis Active Protection via the icon in the system tray, then open Explorer and navigate to:
C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts where you will see files of extension .TIB.TIS

The file with the most recent date/time is most likely going to be the one for your backup task, so open this in Notepad and check for the backup name near the top of the file to confirm that this is the correct file.  If it is, then delete that file.

Deleting the file will remove it from the ATI GUI but there is a further step needed here as there will still be references to the backup task & files in the Acronis Database.

Open the Services.MSC control panel, and stop all Acronis Services shown, then open Windows Task Manager and end any active Acronis Processes shown.

The final action is then to navigate to C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\ and then delete or rename the Database folder shown there.  Doing this will then force ATI to create a new Database for your backup tasks and thus forget all about any old tasks removed manually.

Please see forum topic: Acronis True Image hangs at applying user settings? - where another user found a very similar problem was caused by an extra comma in a .tib.tis file!
