Cloning HDD to used SSD

Thread needs solution

I apologize ahead of time if there is an answer to this question somewhere here.  I am a newby to this and do not have a huge understanding of the process of cloning drives.  I had recently purchased a 1 TB Crucial SSD for an older laptop and I followed the steps correctly on how to clone the HDFD and install the SSD in the laptop.  Well the laptop died so I have purchased a new laptop which I would like to be able to put the new/slightly used SSD in.  I do not care if any of the stuff on the new/used SSD gets saved when switching the hard drives.  Do I just follow the procedures like when I first cloned the older HDD on to the SSD?  Will the cloning of the new laptop clear off all the old clone that was on the SSD?  Thanks, Jake

Jake, welcome to these public User Forums.

Any clone operation will always wipe the target drive of all current data, including partitions, as the first action of the clone, so as to prepare the drive to be a duplicate of the source drive being cloned.

If you have bought a new laptop which comes with Windows installed, then please make a full Disk & Partitions backup of the current internal drive before you attempt to clone it to the spare SSD from the old, failed laptop.  This is your safety net in the event of any mistakes or issues!

If you have installed ATI 2019 on the new laptop and activated it, then you can use the Active Clone feature, but I would recommend using Windows Disk Management to remove the current volumes shown on the SSD, as this will remove the need to restart the computer for the Active Clone.  A restart is normally required when Acronis finds an existing OS install on the target drive.

Ditto to Steve's comments.

01.) Backup the existing hard drive in the new system first - just in case. (safety net!)

02.) Use disk management to delete all volumes on the 1TB drive and initialize it again (to prevent the need to reboot and boot into the Linux environment - basically so you can do an Active clone.

03.) Do an active clone from the existing drive to the 1TB drive.

04. ) Shutdown the computer, remove the old drive and plug in the newly cloned 1TB drive

05.) boot into bios and make sure the 1TB has the 1st priority still.

06.) boot up the new drive and OS and hopefully all is well.
