AB 11.7 bootable image - problem with Samsung EVO SSD drive

Thread needs solution

Hi all, does anybody knows of issues with Samsung SSD EVO 860 drive ? I do have problems with the AB bootable image, after replacing an old HD by such a drive (after having mirrored it):

Running the bootable image (localhost) and browsing vaults, all local folders (=partitions) of my other 4 drives are missing. The only ones shown are those of this new SSD, and they are even listed twice ! See screenshots. Impossible to run a backup like this ...

To say that AB works fine within Win-10, and I have no problems with any drive, except the issue above.

Thank you for a hint !
Cheers, Freddy

Freddy,

You may want to repost in the Acronis Backup 11.7 forum thread as this section is dedicated to Acronis True Image home products.

I don’t use Backup 11.7/12/12.5 very much so can’t offer much.  However, I suspect that this may be a driver issue with the 11.7 rescue media (default Linux).  The EVO 860 should just be a SATA drive (even if m.2 form factor).  That said, drivers could be an issue if using m.2, depending on the OS.

I would try building rescue media as WinPE (or WinRE) - if you grab the MVP custom winpe builder this will simplify the process for you and make adding any custom drivers pretty easy.  Ultimately, WinPE (Windows 10 ADK) or WinRE (your system local recovery environment based off of WinPE) may have better driver support.

If the system is attaching to a specific add-in card or RAID controller, then you’ll want to add those drivers into the rescue media.

Thank you for the suggestions, Bobbo,

Yes, probably a Linux related driver issue. I tried it with a bootable ISO of Acronis Backup 12.5, and it found all my partitions !

Your MVP custom PE builder script is great, including tutorial ! Unfortunately, it doesn't recognize my installation (Acronis Backup 11.7, a business product). To build a WinPE, I guess I have to download the 6 GB ADK :-(

Regarding controller: It's a supported Intel ICH10 Sata controller, and the EVO 860 drive is a 2.5"

Greetings, Freddy

P.S. I prefer to keep if possible AB 11.7, for compatibility and stability reasons (in my experience, Acronis needs years to fix the many bugs they generate when introducing major changes, which is probably the case between 11.7 and 12.5)

P.S. About posting into appropriate subforum:
I didn't find out how to do it. My post went automatically into "Non Product Related", and was probably moved by a moderator.

Update:

I played disc jockey, i.e. installed the Windows ADK 1809 and Acronis in a VM, and created a WIN-PE based bootable image. Booting from it, it detected properly all my partitions.

Clearly an indication that the Linux based media builder of Acronis backup 11.7 dislikes my new Samsung EVO 860 1TB SSD drive.

Awesome!

Yeah, unfortunately, the ADK is a separate download and Microsoft licensing doesn't allow pre-built WinPE so we can't distribute it.  Plus, we wanted to keep the tool as light as possible for distribution.

Now that ADK is installed and verified to be working, sounds like you're all set and glad to hear that it's picking everything up automatically.

Down the road, you can also try the WinRE option.  If you don't have ADK installed, you can to build rescue media using the local system WinRE.  The WinRE is based off of WinPE and the system drivers of the system it's built from.  ADK with Windows 10 has a lot of default driver support, and if you want to add custom drivers, the tool makes it pretty easy too.  But, if WinRE has the local drivers already, then sometimes it makes it even easier for a particular machine.

Apparently, you're not the only one with this forum bug.  We've been seeing other "generic" threads popping up these last couple of weeks.  The forum mod is aware, but doesn't look like they have a fix for it yet.

Thank you to stay in touch !

Win-PE based media:
My periodic standard backup of 85 GByte is ~40% slower, compared to running it with Linux. But Linux is currently not an option, because of the problems described above.

WinRE vs. ADK:
Yeah, nice option (i'm not expert). But as said, your script didn't detect my installation of Acronis. I have therefore built the media using the Acronis media builder. Would this tool be able to create an image using the WinRE facility ?

My solution:
I'll abandon the usage of bootable media for regular backup. As I have 3 systems, it's much easier to install a 2nd instance of Acronis on one of them, and run backups from there. And I pray that all these backups made with different environments will be recoverable :-)

Greetings and thank you for helping me solve this problem!

Be careful with cross pollinating backups in True Image and Backup. Here's the compatibility matrix.

What version of the script did you use? It has been tested with backup 11.7 and 12/12.5 and working with WinRE and ADK, at least on PC based windows OS - have not tried with any server OS. I currently have a build with 12.5 that was recently made and then another that I created with 12.5, snap deploy, true image, revive and disk director 12.5 all in one.

As for winRE builds, it can only use the system WinRE if the recovery environment is there and not corrupted. But yes, WinRE also works with the script.

Using reagentc /info can help determine if WinRE is available or not
