Differential Backup

Thread needs solution

I recently acquired a WD 8 TB My Book and would like to back up my computer's data.

The method I'm using is differential.  The amount of data that I am backing up is nearly 6 TB.  So, with my settings, it backs up the 6 TB.  Then the next 6 nights are differential backups, usually around 20 GB each.  But then the backup halts because there is not enough room for another FULL backup.

According to the help file, here is the situation:  "Always plan for one extra full backup, because the automatic cleanup happens after a new full backup is created, not before."

My issue is that I do not have room for a second full backup at this point.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I'd prefer to go with the differential backup method.  After the backup runs for 6 days, I have to manually delete all the data, and let it run a backup from there (a FULL backup and six differentials.)

Thanks in advance...

Dave, welcome to these public User Forums.

Acronis works in the way described above, i.e. nothing is ever deleted before a new full backup has been successfully created, so you are stuck with doing as you have been or else you will need to consider how you can split your backup into smaller chunks instead of having one giant 6TB backup.

If you are using 'Entire PC' as your backup Source selection and this in turns includes more than one physical disk drive, then separate each drive into a separate backup task using 'Disks & Partitions' instead of 'Entire PC'.

Selecting specific types of data for your backup is another option, i.e. keep a separate backup of your main OS and applications, but then have additional backup tasks for such as photos, videos etc.

Breaking the backup into smaller files is a great idea.  I will give that a try.  Thanks, Steve.
