Not same size of data

Thread solved

I have created cloud backups from two different computers.

I use files and folders as source.

On one of them Acronis reports 142 GB to recover. When I add the folder sizes on my HDD, I get 51GB.

Please advise

I have created cloud backups from two different computers.

Difficult to comment here without more information.  I have my own files & folders backups to the cloud and don't see any issues with regard to the size information shown to me?

Example:  I backup a folder called 'Software' which contains many sub-folders and many more files. The screen images below show the size status that I am seeing in the ATI GUI, Windows Explorer folder properties and the size in the Cloud.

The only real size difference is that shown in the Cloud Dashboard which shows 81.3GB versus the local sizes shown at 58.5-7GB, but which is explained by the Cloud cleanup settings in use which keep older versions etc.

Hi Steve

I have come a bit closer to the problem.

The two pictures show big differences between PC and Acronis.

I have not downloaded anything since I started using Acronis

Any ideas?

Flemming, there are other differences here than just the size from your 2 new images.

Acronis is showing 32940 files and 5177 folders to make up 97GB of data, but Windows Explorer is only showing 24348 files and 4401 Folders to give only 6.73GB of data.

This suggests that either you do not have 'Show hidden files, folders, drives' enabled in Explorer and are only seeing a subset of the actual files & folders, or else you have done some serious house-keeping in this folder since you created the original backup to the Cloud?

Hi Steve

I have hidden item enabled, and I have not touched the DL folder since I installed Acronis a few days ago.

I opened a command window in the download directory. I typed dir /s

I see about the same number of files as, and many more directories than Acronis. The problem is evidently in my computer.

Any more suggestions?

Have you checked what Exclusions are in play for your Acronis backup task?  The defaults will exclude any .tmp files along with .tib etc, so some of these may be involved here?

Hi Steve

I am using the standard exclusions in Acronis.

That may explain the the different number of files in Acronis and my directory listing

The data sizes in Acronis and the directory listing are quite similar. Not knowing when one kB is 1000 bytes or 1024 bytes.

The number of directories in the listing 15530 must be the total number on the disk.

Acronis is doing fine.

The problem is still on my computer.

Hi Steve

I got the following from answers.microsoft.com:

Hi Flemming, there is a bug in Explorer, where it cannot read the correct size of complex folder structures or the free space on a hard drive, Microsoft are aware of this and are working to resolve this bug . . .

In the meantime, click the link below to download a small totally free utility called Treesize. Using that tool, you will instantly see the correct size of files and folders and where this space is being used on your hard drive . . .

https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/

that explains the problems with file explorer.

Thanks for your effort

Flemming, thanks for the update.  I am a regular user of TreeSize Free and find it very useful for a range of different purposes.

Good to know - interesting that it's known to Microsoft, but not a widely available bit of information!  Treesize free is great.  I also use mindgems folder size as it tends to work as a "portable" app too.
