Will not remove previous backups, reserve copies, nor will it shut down after the proceedure.

Thread needs solution

Acronis Tech Support,

I have been using True Home Image Home 2011 Plus for over two months with little success.

The PC where it's used has four 1TB hard drives labeled C - F. C is the working drive to be backed up to E; F would hold reserve backups.

What I want to do is:
1.    Create a backup every night at 11PM of drive C onto drive E.
2.    Create a reserve backup on drive F.
3.    Replace the backup from the previous night or keep no more than the 2 most current backups.
4.    Send an e-mail to notify me of the backup status; pass or fail with error messages.
5.    Shutdown the computer as soon as the backup is complete.
6.    If there is a hardware failure, restore the most recent backup to the new hardware.

After trying this for 10 weeks the results are:
1.    A backup attempts to run every night at 11PM. If there's enough room on the target drive it succeeds but it will not remove any previous backups so when the disk is full there is no new backup. The same is true for reserve backups.
2.    An e-mail is sent daily.
3.    The computer does not shut down.
4.    When I attempted to restore a single Excel file it was reported to be corrupt and would not open.

I was hoping the recent update would solve the problem but nothing changed.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Now I've discovered Tech Support will not provide support without buying a support contract. Interesting.

This is how I would do it:
- because of 6, I would choose a disk and partition backup
- because of 1 and 2, I would backup C:\ to E with the schedule that you want
- because of 2, I'd add a reserve backup onto F in the "disk backup options > advanced tab > backup reserve copy", ,
- because of 5, I would check the "shutdown the computer..." in the "disk backup options > advanced tab > computer shutdown",
- because of 4, I would fill out the tab in "disk backup options > advanced tab > email notifications"

It looks like you have done this already and that your main issue is how the versions are managed.

The way I would go is with full backups. The backup scheme would be:
- custom
- backup method "full"
- Turn on automatic clean up
- Store no more than 2 recent versions

If you don't have enough space to store 2 full backups, I would use a differential backup:
- custom
- backup method "differential"
- Create only differential versions after the initial full backup
- Turn on automatic consolidation settings
- Number of backup versions exceeds 2.

I personally prefer full backups because:
- I have had random issues with consolidation of images (failure of process or corruption of image),
- if you defragment your disk automatically, a differential image might turn as big as a full anyway.

I don't know how TI 2011 manages reserve copies though: does it delete the corresponding versions when it deletes the main backup?

If this still doesn't work, you might want to try the "chain2gen" script. http://forum.acronis.com/forum/5940
