can't restore from a different system

Thread solved

on the second system I have created a user with administrative priveleges with the same *****@hotmail.com microsoft account login as the original system. Trying to mount the backup file as a virtual drive, says "read only access, permission denied".  Doing this from Explorer.exe running with administrative priveleges and logged in with the same credentials as the original system.  Trying to restore from the True Image GUI, it does not show all the subfolders.

Chuck, welcome to these public User Forums.

When you are on a different system, any user account that you create will never be identical to the same user account created on another system, regardless of using exactly the same email account and password.

Files captured on the source system include the permissions from the original owner and these permissions will only ever match that original owner.

When recovering such files, you need to open the Recovery Options and select to not recover the files with their original permissions.

See the ATI 2019 User Guide section on Recovery Options.

File recovery options

Location: Recovery options > Advanced > File recovery options

You can select the following file recovery options:

  • Recover files with their original security settings - if the file security settings were preserved during backup (see File-level security settings for backup), you can choose whether to recover them or let the files inherit the security settings of the folder where they will be recovered to. This option is effective only when recovering files from file/folder backups.

WHERE do I find "Recovery Options" ?

Since the source drive is from a different system, it does not show in the list of Backups on this system.

If I try to add a new Backup with the Source being the drive from the other system, it says "No data to recover yet - Create your first backup version to see its content here", since no backup was done to this drive from this system.

I have also tried MOUNTING the backup as a virtual drive, but no luck copying stuff from that either.  If I try to go into the folder I want to copy from I get "You don't currently have permission to access this folder". If I select "Continuie", I get "You have been denied permission to access this folder - To gain access to this folder you will need to use the security tab". If I select that I get "You must have Read permissions to view the properties of this object". I am unable to change the permissions so I can access it.

Chuck, you need to use the 'Add existing backup' for your backup from the other system, not to just use Add backup.

Once you have taken the above option, navigate to where the .tib file is located then select it to add it to the GUI, after which you should be able to open the Recovery page, which when you go into the recovery process will offer you a Recovery options choice.

That worked.  But after adding that existing backup I had to exit ATI and restart it for that backup to show.  I was able to restore some stuff, thanks for your help.

Glad to be able to help Chuck, thanks for the feedback.
