USB Boot says Failed to check license key.

Thread needs solution

Hello Linda,

Thank you for replying. Please let me assist you.

We did not have the proper components in our system but this has been fixed. I will follow-up with a private message in a few minutes.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Hello Linda and Dave,

I’m sincerely sorry for the issue remains. In this case we need to take a closer look at the problem. Could you please gather Acronis Linux Report and contact support directly with the information attached. Keep in mind that should there be any procrastination with the reply, you can always specify us the case number. We will do our best to speed up the process.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Hello all,

I would like to provide a small update regarding this issue.

While we are still working on a fix our Expert team suggested the following workaround, you can try using Grub4DOS and boot off the ISO files directly. This applies only to the issue with USB booting.

As soon as I have any news I will update this thread.

Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience.

Thank you.

I ran into the same problem while trying to put the current release of B&R 10 on USB and PXE.

Grub4DOS is only an option for USB, and unfortunately not as straightforward as syslinux is...

Hi Anton,

I have the same problem with Yannick, please sent me the correct file to fix this issue.

Hello all!

Thank you for your comments and cooperation!

Dear Heiko,

according to the Forum logs, you've already been sent the instructions with the link for updated bootable components. We would appreciate if you could kindly keep us posted regarding the issue, so that we could provide you with further assistance if necessary.

Dear Truong and Huynh,

we will be glad to provide you with the updated bootable components, but in order to do it we need to know the product license that you have. This information allows us to choose the correct components, that would match your program architecture and language.

Unfortunately we couldn't find any license or purchase information registered to your account. Please either register your product keys here, or send to me or Anton via Private Messages.

As soon as we have the information about the valid product licenses, we will be able to proceed with sending you the correct links.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Do those updated files include the Universal Restore functionality? If so can I please get those files too?

Hi Yana,
I'm using Acronis Backup & Recovery Workstation (with Universal Restore) v10.0.11345.Please to help me resolve this problem.
Thank you very much.

Hello all,

Thank you for your comments!

Dear Heiko, thank you for the update. I'm glad to know that the issue got resolved! Should you need anything else - let us know, we will gladly help!

Dear Lynda, Acronis Universal Restore is not a components, thus it doesn't have a bootable components. Acronis Universal Restore is an option, and in case it's installed on the machine and loaded to the PXE, it will be present.

Dear Huynh, thank you for your reply and for the information provided! The build you're using is an outdated one, so the issue can be solved by simply updating the product. Please register the license of it in your account, download the latest build and proceed with installing it. Please see the detailed instructions of the update process in this KB article.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Hi Yana,

I had the same problem as Linda for the Universal Restore. Can you send me the file with the bootable component for the PXE ? I know that the universal restore isn't a components. The option isn't there if we click on restore on a Syslinux PXE Boot. The cd have the option but not the bootable component that Anton sent me that corrected the licence bug (maybe you have a new version with a fix for the universal restore?)

Let us know because it's a major problem for us. We need the universal restore because we paid for that and we need it on a PXE boot.

Thanks

Also Yana, I want to add that we are 3-4 people with the same problem for the Universal Restore... in this thread...and I'm sure we won't be alone with this problem... btw you should rename the thread for USB Boot and PXE Boot for other people in your forum :)

I tried the Acronis support and I linked this forum problem to them but I got worst support then here ... well maybe I wasn't patient enought :) but I know that you are working to correct this solution. Let us know when it will be corrected ? You can easily test it out on a PXE boot with a Syslinux or other Linux PXE boot...the option for the universal restore isn't there with Anton Fix... Maybe because Acronis doesn't see the serial number that include the universal restore and the software hide the option ?

I didn't try the latest build but I saw here that other people got the same problem as myself with latest one.

Just read the thread from the beginning you will see that I tested a lot of stuff for the Universal Restore and I don't know why you don't check it out on your side with the same environnement. Medium and Large Network the PXE Boot is essential... cdrom isn't an option for the universal restore :)

Hello Acronis support

I ran into the same problem while trying to put the current release of B&R 10 on PXE.
I always get the error message "Failed to check the license key. The key is disabled".

Would it be possible to send the updates files to me in a PM ?

Best regards

Jens

P.S. We're using build 12497

Hello all,

Thank you for your posts. I would like to update this thread with additional information that I received from our Development team.

There are two supported ways to start an Acronis product from a USB flash drive, you can create it by the means of an Acronis software or using GRUB4DOS. Please check this article for additional information and instructions - Starting Acronis Product from USB Flash Drive.

We no longer support flash_syslinux and will not be able to assist you with investigating such issues or provide you with updated bootable files.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Hello Anton,

I would like to make clear that I would like to boot from PXE and not from USB !!
Can you send me the necessary files to boot from PXE ?

Best regards

Jens

Hello Jens,

Thank you very much for the follow-up! I will definitely help you with this issue.

If you are using some other PXE server, I am afraid that we will not be able to assist you with the boot components. I just replied to another Customer today with a similar issue.

However, if you are using Acronis PXE Server and you are running the latest build (12497), this issue can be resolved the following way:

1. After updating to the latest build, please make sure that the Acronis PXE Server component is also included in the update.

2. Re-configure the PXE Server so that the latest bootable components get uploaded and you stop receiving the license error message ("Failed to check the license key. The key is disabled"). To update the PXE Server, please do the following - From the main program menu click on Create bootable media->Navigate through the wizard and almost towards the end, select the Acronis PXE Server to upload the bootable components to.

3. Please make sure that Acronis Universal Deploy is also installed on this machine and it is updated to the latest build too (12497).

I am certain that if you follow steps 1-3 this issue will be resolved.

If you need additional help, please let me know.

Thank you.

I am also having the same error "Failed to Check the License Key"
Would someone be able to help me out as well?

Thanks
Mike

I played around a bit: You don't need grub4dos and you can get it to work with a normal pxelinux.

1) Create an ISO with the Media Builder
2) Put the ISO on your tftp-server next to your other images
3) Make sure you have a recent SYSLINUX/PXELINUX environment including the memdisk module (I tried 4.03 successfully)
4) add this label:
--- snip ---
label acronisbr10
kernel memdisk
initrd <your ISO file>
append iso raw
--- snop ---

as the iso for the newest build is beyond 150MB this will take quite long over tftp. But it does work.

BTW: This also works well with syslinux on USB. Of course it's a workaround and it's ugly and wasteful - but at least it works until Acronis can fix this bug.

Hello Linda!

Thank you for your comment.

Acronis Universal Restore is not a component, it's an option. Thus since it's not a component, it doesn't require any update components or else. In case it's installed on the machine, and specified in the PXE server, it should be present regardless the bootable components update.

In case it's not present, we will need to take a closer look at the problem. Please gather Acronis Linux Report and contact support directly with the information attached. Keep in mind that should there be any procrastination with the reply, you can always specify us the case number. We will do our best to speed up the process.

We would appreciate if all, who are searching for a solution, could kindly pay attention to the instructions specified by Anton in this and this comments in the thread. This information should help you to resolve the problem.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Hello Michael,

Thank you for posting. I will definitely help you with this issue.

In order to resolve this problem I would really appreciate if you could provide me with a step-by-description of your process for creating the bootable usb media. Just in case, you can check the following guide that lists the steps required to create it from Windows.

Looking forward to your reply and if you have additional questions, please let me know.

Thank you.

I realize that it is not a component, but one set of the components you sent me had the Universal Restore option, but could not use it because of the license issue, then the other did not have the license issue but the Universal Restore OPTION was not available. There is nowhere to use the option, it is not present.

I'm having a similar problem after extracting the USB or ISO-created files and then using in the Ultimate Boot CD. Using this method, Backup and Recovery used to work fine but I'm not getting "Failed to check license key". If someone could assist it would be appreciated.

Hi,

I'm trying to get Acronis Backup & Recovery Advanced 10 Workstation to run on our Linux PXE Server.
So far i managed to boot into the agent, but i have the same problem with the License as is mentioned on the first page of this thread.

Can you please give me further details on how to fix this issue?

Thank you in advance

EDIT: Just for clarification: I tried this with the bootable medium i created with the bootable media builder and of course also with

the newest bootable medium, which i downloaded here with and without Universal Restore.

With the one I created myself and the downloaded version without UR I have this licensing problem.

With the one from this site with UR I don't even get that far: kernel.dat and agent_ramdisk.dat are loading but after some seconds i receive a kernel panic stating: "Kernel panic - not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown - block(1,0)"

My question now is: Is there any chance for me getting the ISOLINUX version of this product?

Since my PXE Server is based on PXELINUX this way it should work

Hi Anton

I have the same problem,

When making a USB bootable key with GRUB using:

title Acronis Backup & Recovery Advanced Workstation Boot CD
root (hd0,0)
kernel /Acronis/kernel.dat acpi=off vga=ask quiet
initrd /Acronis/agent_ramdisk.dat /s
boot

Then the software tells me that it failed to check the license key and that it has been disabled.

Acronis Backup & Recovery Advanced Workstation (ChineseTraditional) 9 license(s)
Product native bootable media
Build: #12457 Size: 157.00 MB
Date: November 22, 2010

Thank You
Best Regards!!

Hello, I am also having the same issue with bootable USB showing Failed to check the license key using Backup and Recovery 10

Dear Customers,

Thank you for your comments.

As it's been stated in the below comment, the issue is reported to be fixed in the latest software builds, and no more custom updates are available, so we would appreciate if you could follow the instructions mentioned in Anton's post here.

In case the issue's not solved even after it, please gather Acronis Linux Report and submit a case with the information attached, and let us know it's number.

Please note that we don't proceed with providing the updates for the PXE server as there are no newer version available, and in case the issue remains, it requires investigation.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you.

can you please pm me the bootable components for home 2011. trying to get this to work.

Thanks
Eli

I don't know about home 2011, sorry, but for you others.

Once updated to current version and new recovery media made to a flash drive use the dat2.dat file and not agent_ramdisk.dat

Same problem as everyone else. Using agent_ramdisk.dat and kernel.dat from the bootable media builder with our PXE server and get same license key error.

Could you send me the links to the files as well please?

Thanks
Lou

Old thread I know, but why is this process not stickied somewhere??? Obviously there is something about the ISO lost in extracting it to the .dat file level and something else lost booting as ISO w/o RAW option.

Switching to ISO w/ RAW solved the problem. I had started with memdisk/ISO method as I normally do for all ISO's that should fit in RAM using memdisk only to have it fail for lack of RAW option. Which digressed into extracting the ISO into .dat's & still getting nowhere!!!!

I just wasted hours trying to figure out this issue only to find something about a french license and then a statement from support that they do not support the syslinux method anymore! This is definitely my LAST copy of TIH I or my customers will EVER buy because the support has been so bad on this & previous issues. Get a clue Acronis.

Hi,

I have the same problem but I'm using it on PXE Boot. I don't use the Acronis PXE Server.

I tried to copy the agent_ramdisk.dat and the kernal.dat from the cd and from the server that have the licence "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis\BackupAndRecoveryAgent" and I still got the same error message as him.

Do you think it's possible to send me the same file to correct the situation ?

Please note that I have :
Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 Advanced Workstation Upgrade (French)
Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 Advanced Workstation Universal Restore Upgrade (French)
Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 Advanced Server Upgrade (French)
Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 Advanced Server Universal Restore Upgrade (French)
Acronis Backup&Recovery Advanced Workstation Universal Restore (French)
Acronis Backup&Recovery Advanced Workstation (French)
Acronis Backup&Recovery Advanced Server Universal Restore (French)
Acronis Backup&Recovery Advanced Server General (French)

I really don't know why the agent_ramdisk.dat don't have the licence key in a PXE Boot but he can find it on the cd ???

The CD works well if I boot it on this PC.

Thanks for your help !

Hi,

Does this problem still exist? I know this is an old thread but I currently have the problem listed here.

I have tried to extract the files and boot (from USB running Linux with Acronis installed) from agent_ramdisk.dat and kernel.dat. Everything starts ok but by recovery it says I don't have a valid licence. I extracted the files from the recovery iso which I downloaded from my Acronis account.
The versions I tried were:
Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 Server for Windows Standard + Universal Restore (German) and
Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 Server for Linux Standard + Universal Restore (German) both with Build: # 37687

I can forward the license Keys if you need verification of the products.

Thanks in advance

We have machines with Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 with Universal Restore.
We are experiencing the same problems as described in the acronis forum thread https://forum.acronis.com/forum/12874  (failed license check)and I would like to receive the same files that all the other people have received to fix the problem.

Best regards

Christer.

Hello Christer,

Thank you for your posting! This thread is rather old and I'm afraid it's not possible to figured out which files were provided to workaround the issue. Given that I would suggest updating to the latest build within the version 10 and trying to boot with the PE-based bootable media. If the issue persists please PM me, I will send you a direct link to the bootable media. I would also recommend to test the latest product version.

Thank you,

Dear support team,

Same problem here. if I try to boot via USB the license is missing.

Could you please send me also the required files?

Kind regards

Jorg

Hello Jorg,

What product are you using? Could you send me the license key to check in a personal message (click Send message under my profile), the first two blocks (16 digits) will be enough.

How have you created the bootable media (using the installed copy of the product or downloaded from your personal account? What operation are you trying to accomplish under a bootable media? Do you get any specific errors?

Thank you,
