Upgrade installation

Thread solved

I hope someone can answer this question. I am about to install Acronis 2020 as an upgrade to 2016. Will I need to set up all my backup requirements again (sources and destinations) or will the new software preserve these during the installation? Thank you.

Keith, welcome to these public User Forums.

It is recommended that you uninstall your older ATI 2016 version before installing / upgrading to ATI 2020.  When you uninstall, it will leave behind your backup task configuration data in the C:\ProgramData\Acronis folders and should import this to ATI 2020 when it is installed.

If there are any problems after installing ATI 2020, then you can also use the option to 'Add existing backup' and select the most recent of your .tib files from the backup storage location.  This will create a task in the ATI GUI with the name of the file (including the part with underscores) but you can rename this to shorten it to the old name.  Any task added by this method would need to be reconfigured, so make notes of your settings before starting this upgrade process.

Don't really know how to carry out a dialog on this forum. Did you get my message re. being unable to uninstall ATI 2016?

Keith, I haven't seen any message about not being able to uninstall ATI 2016.

It is best to keep all communication via this one topic where it is all related.

What issues are you having with uninstalling ATI 2016?

Do you have the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager enabled (to give the F11 prompt on boot)?

Do you have an Acronis Secure Zone setup on this computer?

The normal process to uninstall is simply to go to the Windows Control Panel, then click on Programs & Features and select the application.

If ATI will not uninstall normally, then you would need to download the Acronis Cleanup tool (link is in my signature) and run this as Administrator.  This will try to remove all trace of Acronis products from your system, including your backup tasks configuration data etc.  A reboot is needed after using the tool and before attempting to install the new version.

Thanks for your speedy reply, Steve. Sorry for my struggles with the communication - I am a true newbie to forums (or should that be fora?). Hope you get this anyway. I just did the usual procedure in Windows, clicked on Acronis True Image in the program list then selected 'uninstall'. There was a brief flicker on the program name then nothing. I don't know about enabling the Startup Recovery Manager but I have created a bootable rescue DVD. I do not have a Secure Zone set up on my desktop. Looks like I will need the Cleanup Tool. Sorry to keep bothering you but I do appreciate your help. (It may be something to do with my age - 77).

Keith, couple of additional thoughts - are you using an Administrator account / is there more than one account on your computer?  It may be possible that ATI 2016 was installed from a different account than the one you are using?

Age is nothing but a number! I am not very far behind you in the same decade!

Hi Steve, I have the only account on the PC and I am an administrator. I have had a look at the cleanup tool and I see that I have to go messing around in the registry, which does tend to put me off. I am a bit annoyed that I have just spent money on an upgrade to a great backup product but am having to jump through hoops to get it loaded on to my PC! My licence covers 3 PCs as I have also got to load up on my wife's PC also. If there is no alternative then I guess that is what I will have to do. I assume that if I use the tool I will have to re-configure my backup procedures which I was hoping to avoid. My next step would be to take out a subscription for use of the Acronis cloud and avoid local backups. Is backing up to the cloud a straightforward process? I assume it is.Your help is much appreciated so please don't think I am blaming you for these problems. Is there a danger in simply installing ATI 2020 over the existing version? BTW, nice to know you can still be a digital genius in your seventies! If you have any further suggestions then please let me know. Once again, thanks for your prompt help.

Keith, while the documentation for the cleanup tool speaks about poking around in the registry, you don't need to do that as you are intending to reinstall anyway.

Personally, I would not recommend going to rely only on using cloud backup - it is relatively slow for both backing up and any future recovery actions, plus for recovery introduces it own set of additional variables when it comes to connecting to the cloud from bootable rescue media.

For the current issue of uninstalling ATI 2016, I would recommend doing a Windows restart then give the uninstall another try to see if it gets further.  This is a 'just in case' there might be something holding a lock on some of the programs etc involved?

Hi Steve, the Windows restart worked OK! I have now completed the uninstall. You are a star! I will only be in touch again if I have any problem with the new installation. Thanks again.

Hi Steve, I have lost all my original backup settings and am struggling to set up new backups. Is there a manual available giving detailed, simple to follow instructions for setting up a backup? Every time I think I have set up a backup I get a window telling me that if I try to add a new backup I will lose all the settings. I don't remember it being so difficult to do with ATI 2016. Hope you can advise.

Keith, when you have finished configuring each backup task nothing is saved until you have clicked on one of the options for the Back up now button in the bottom right corner.  If you leave the task settings without doing this, then all the settings will be lost.

If you don't want to run the new backup task straight away, use one of the other options shown or select Later.
