ATI 2020 FirstRound

Thread needs solution

Hi, I've just bought (my first Acronis product) ATI2020 and I'm confused. I want to make full backup every first day of the month and the earlier backup should be deleted every time when the new is done (discspace). In the middle of the full backups I want to make an Incremental backup every day and want Incremental backups to deleted "older than one month". How on earth can I do this?

Juhani, welcome to these public User Forums.

I would recommend reading through the first few sections of the ATI 2020 User Guide which will give you a good introduction to how to use the application.

Creating a full backup on the first day of each month is an easy option in the Schedule page for any backup task, as is the option to delete the older full backup after a new one is created.

The second part of your requirements to create a Daily Incremental backup then delete those that are older than a month is not so easy because in order to create any Incremental backups, a Full backup has to be created first, then the incremental files capture all the changes from that first Full backup.  Also Incremental backups cannot be deleted separately from the version chain that they belong to, this is because all the files in the chain are dependent on each other as well as being dependent on the initial full file.

The other complication is that the Scheduling options have to allow for the fact that months do not have the same number of days, some have 28 or 29, others 30 and some 31 days.  This means that if you impose a scheme or schedule that is based on 30 days, then any new Full backup will not be guaranteed to be created on day 1 of the next month.

The method used by Acronis to try to manage the number of backup files and perform cleanup actions on older chains of files is shown on the Backup Scheme options page.

The default values are shown above, i.e. to create a new Full backup after only 5 incremental versions then delete the whole chain (Full plus 5 incremental files) when they are older than 7 days after the next chain has been created.

You can obviously change these values and use the alternative option for cleanup of Storing no more than 1 or 2 recent version chains.

Hope the above helps to get started here.
