Loss of features with ATI 2020

Thread needs solution

The email I just received re the Data Centre foul-up sent me to the Forum to check out peoples comments re ATI2020 before I moved from 2019.

After quite a few hours of reading, to me V 2020 has really lost the plot on 2 counts.

#1 the discussion at thread "Full Backups no independent entity " showing the possibility of many users holding BUs which may not work (unbeknown to them) when the time comes to use them.
#2 Loss of the ability to mount a .tibx BU (discontinued - was the advice from support). Yes I see .tib will still mount, but the ability to force a tib rather than a tibx BU seem rather limited and maybe over time be considered 'legacy' and not available at all.

For many years my approach has been to NOT bother with Acronis keeping track of BUs due to limited offsite options. So I copy & delete the backups I choose.
On each of my PCs, I use ATI to make a scheduled weekly Full BU of my C_OS partition and another of my D_Data partition, both to a local drive. Then regularly I copy these 2 .tib files (now 20G & 180G) to an external usb drive which is taken off site and also to another USB drive which travels with me.
The BUs are passworded should the drives be lost. and no renaming required since files are dated.

As time goes by the local drive will have 6-8 of these weeklys so I delete a few of the oldest to make room for 3 or 4 future weeks (2 TB drive so always plenty of room). The external drives I progressively delete older BUs over time and archive to another onsite drive so I have at least a monthly of last 12 months and maybe a 3 or 6 monthly of the year before. Currently my oldest is 2016

Why keep the older ones? Because I can mount them if I need an old file I've since deliberately deleted off my PC. Also If my live drive fails/corrupts/malwared, I have more than 1 BU just in case the latest won't work for some reason.
Also while travelling with a small (lightly data loaded) laptop I can carry my complete work BUs to mount and make any file from my desktop available.

This method is SO SIMPLE to follow - the copies happen in the background while working on other stuff - I have mounts I can use anywhere I have Acronis - I have BUs to restore - I don't have Acronis telling me what I can & can't do and cripple the product I HAVE PAID FOR.
But now 2020 - it's suddenly become all too hard. A full single BU file is not sufficient.
After 3-4 ATI licences annually since 2011 - the search is on for an alternative.

Oz, I would recommend copying your comments above into the Feedback tool in the ATI GUI and submitting them direct to Acronis rather than hoping that someone from Acronis might read them in these user forums.

Oz,

This scheme will still work for you if you setup the task as a Custom Scheme using a Backup method of Full.

You can still achieve this flexibility using TI 2020.  True you cannot "mount" a backup but you can open backup files, navigate to desired file locations, and copy needed files to desired locations.  Not what you are use to but should accomplish the same end result.

I actually did take the discount and did update to TI2020, but am going back to TI2018.  It works just fine and my new copy of 2020 won't create a Rescue Media nor will it create a Universal Restore USB.   Also I use an MVP USB with drivers specific to each of my machines and it appears the script to create that USB died back with TI 2018.  Yes, the TI 2020 will create a backup but I have no confidence that I will be able to recover it when I need to.  So I will revert.

Maybe in a year or two we will have a 2020 version that will work.  Also I have begun to suspect Acronis' intentions.  I posted 2 questions re: these challenges in this forum and they have never appeared.  So I suspect somebody is not allowing the forum to post questions that show the possibility of problems with 2020.

When will the ability to MOUNT the backup be available. I used to mount the image and use Beyond Compare to determine the differences. NO LONGER CAN DO! I HAVE BEEN USING TRUE IMAGE for well over 10 years. And now, I have to downgrade? Com'on MAN!!!

This and the fact I can no longer check out with a thumb drive to verify installation is very disheartening.

Two steps forward three steps back.

Hello Everyone,

I've registered your feedback in the related feature requests - the functionality listed in https://kb.acronis.com/content/63425 is in development, but we collect all the statistics and feedback regarding the absence of features available for the old archive format.
