Backup Location Encryption versus Plan Encryption

Thread needs solution

Does anyone know the difference between these two? Whether your should use on or the other? And when you would get prompted for each one's password?

Hello Ryan!

Based on the help text in the management console and the user guide:

  • Plan encryption: Choose this if only some backups would need to be encrypted, or if you want to set different password for different machines. Though apparently you can store encryption settings per machine, which could override this.
  • Location encryption: Choose this if you want to make sure any plan that chooses this destination will be encrypted. It says "any data written to this location" so I imagine even metadata will be encrypted.

As for the promt, it's likely you'll need to supply it any time an opperation needs to access an encrypted source, much like you need to supply credentials where applicable.
