Unable to restore an image to a smaller disk

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have True Image 2018 (updated) on Win 10, and I want to clone an Linux microSD card.

Source: microSD 16 GB (4 GB used, 16 GB allocated EXT4)

Dest: microSD 8 GB (empty)

I got only one microSD to USB adapter.

I make an image of the source (4 GB .tib file)

When i use it to restore (disk mode) to the 8 GB microSD, i have an error "Unable to restore the selected disk".

According to Acronis kb 2770 this should be possible.

How can i proceed ? Thank you

Cedric, welcome to these public User Forums.

The main issue here is that the source SD card is using EXT4 for the file system and older versions of ATI such as 2018 will use sector-by-sector mode when backing up this file system, so the backup size will be similar to the full 16GB size, hence why it is too large to fit the smaller target 8GB new SD card.

The handling of EXT4 file systems has been resolved in ATI 2020 but not for 2018 or 2019 versions.

You may want to try using Clonezilla instead to do this backup / restore of the Linux EXT4 card.
