Can backup under Win 7 with Acronis 2010 be restored to new PC with Windows 10?

Thread solved

I have an older PC running Win 7 Pro and Acronis True Image 2010.  If I purchase a new PC running Windows 10 can I use my backup to restore my C: drive partition programs to the new Windows 10?  I keep all my data on another partition (E: drive) separate from program files which are on the C: drive, therefore I can transfer them by copy and paste.

Thomas, welcome to these public User Forums.

If you purchase a new PC running Windows 10, then it is highly likely that it will have hardware components which were completely unknown to both ATI 2010 and to Windows 7, and therefore any attempt to restore any backups from those versions will probably corrupt Windows 10 and stop it from booting!

Next, no version of ATI can be used to move installed programs or applications to a different computer, you have to backup and recover the whole Windows OS with its installed programs.

Please see KB 19296: Acronis products cannot be used to transfer applications to different system or upgrade OS

For the scenario you describe, you will need to reinstall any programs / applications that you currently use on Windows 7, on the new Windows 10 computer, ensuring that you obtain versions of those programs that are compatible with Windows 10.

I would strongly recommend that you obtain a new version of ATI to work with your new Windows 10 computer - this would need to be at least ATI 2015 or later, as no earlier version is compatible, and the recommended version would be ATI 2020, which is also the only currently supported version too.

Please make a full backup of the Windows 10 computer before attempting to move or copy any data etc to it.  This is your safety net in the event of any change 'breaking' the new OS.

Steve, thanks for the information and warning about possibly corrupting a Win 10 installation!
