Can someone please give me an idea of what "test restore" does? Is it ever possible to corrupt the original hard drive when doing so?

You take the image of your system patition (and other partitions needed to boot, e.g. windows 7 system reserved), and to test it , you restore this backup back. 2) Yes, it's possible. That's why it's better to restore to some spare drive, maybe even with the original one unplugged, or restore to a virtual machine.
