Terminated by user

Thread needs solution

Attempts to do a disk backup to an external hard disk keep stopping with the message "terminated by user". But I have not stopped the back up! I have searched the forums for this error message and got a few hits but they are either not relevant or don't included answers.

This happens if I leave the computer unattended overnight - so there is no question of a user doing anything to stop the back up.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium and the latest build of Acronis 2010.

Any ideas

Is it possible that you computer goes to sleep or changes power settings (reduced power) during the backup but is then woken up by something else (NIC, other task)?

See also this http://forum.acronis.com/forum/7639, where a reboot is involved.

You can track down power events in the event viewer > windows log > system

When TI pops up an error window and the window is closed either by default (timeout) or closed by the user by clicking cancel, etc. this operation is considered "terminated by user."

This could be Ti advising you that the disk is full; or that specific files cannot be backed up, etc.

The latest most recent update added a user control error option as part of the Help section.

If I were you, I would check if disk size could be an issue based on your option settings; and/or you might want to check your disk and files for possible disk or file errors. Also, if using the most recent update, set the timeout so the error will still be on the screen when you next it next after a backup.

Thank you for these suggestions. In fact I seem to have tried them.

I normally have the computer set so that is goes to sleep after a period of inactivity. So I tried changing to settings which kept everything on permanently and then tried a back up overnight: I still got the terminated message. (Incidentally, not being an expert, I don't understand why the computer should go to sleep if it is doing something ie the back up!)

I also changed the timeout to 'infinity'. This didn't help.

I am pretty sure the disk I am backing up to isn't full; there is certainly no message saying so.

I've run chkdsk to try to deal with file errors.

Why should some files not be capable of being backed up if you are doing a disk and partition back up?

Hello all,

Thank you for posting and your help.

Alan, I will do my best to assist you.

Partition backups should not be interrupted by some files being in use, this is the whole purpose of Acronis snapshot technology. Most likely there is another reason, I would really appreciate if you could get back to me with the AcronisInfo report so that I can study the program logs and get back to you.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Anton

Thanks. I have created an AcronisInfo report as you suggest and I have tried to attach it to his response but got an error. The zip file produced may be too large. It is about 44,000 kb.

I'd be grateful for any help you can give. May I also mention that Non Stop back up has also stopped working.

regards

Hello Alan,

Thank you for the follow-up.

I will generate an ftp link for you and send it to your via a private message.

Please tell me more in detail how NSB stops. Are you running the latest build which is 7154 at the moment?

Let me know if you have additional questions please.

Thank you.

Hello Alan,

Than you for the report.

According to the logs, the backup fails because there is not enough free space on the backup destination and after a 10 minute timeout the backup stops with an ambiguous error message - Terminated by user.

I can recommend to adjust the timeout settings, maybe to set them to infinite to avoid this issue in the future. Please check this article for instructions.

If you like, you can follow-up with me later when you have time to work on the Nonstop backup issue.

If you need additional assistance, please let me know.

Thank you.
