DD 12.5 bootable media clones do not boot

Thread needs solution

Using the bootable media, cloned drives do not boot. I am copying the NT Signature when cloning.

It worked once when using identical new hard drives, but not with different drive models, i.e WD to Seagate.

Macrium boot repair disk was able to fix the boot records for a Win 10 clone, so it is apparently DD's handling of boot records.

I believe I had the same problems with DD 11 when cloning pre Win 10 drives. I updtated to DD 12.5 hoping it might be better, and for the Win 10 partition support but no luck..

Hello Gary,

thank you for your posting! Are you booting the media in the same boot mode that Windows boots? This is essential for the OS to boot from the new drive. https://forum.acronis.com/comment/399695#comment-399695 here you'll find more hints. In addition to that, if you are using a laptop, it is recommended to put the new drive in the laptop first, and connect the old drive via USB.

These are removable drives and I'm using the ISO downloaded from your website. I have not installed DD on an OS.

Various OS's get cloned.

Both drives are not attached when booting,

Please check that the system drive you are trying to clone from uses the same BIOS mode for booting into the OS as your own system you are doing the clone from.  Acronis will use your PC BIOS mode for the target drive of the clone, so if you have a UEFI / GPT BIOS mode boot PC and you are cloning a Legacy / MBR system drive, it will be migrated to UEFI / GPT!

The source disk is being cloned on the same machine the clone will boot on. The clone is used as a backup drive.

BIOS is American Megatrends 9902, 6/6/2013, Legacy Mode, and Asus P8B75-M board.

OS's built on this box that failed to boot after cloning are Win10 and 2003 Server x64.

Thank you for additional details! In this case I'd recommend raising a support ticket, so that  our engineers can look into the situation.

Perhaps also worth trying this suggestion (install the new drive as a boot drive and the cloned drive as an external drive) https://forum.acronis.com/comment/542440#comment-542440
