Used 2020, ran backup, try to open and 'Failed to Open Backup'

Thread needs solution

Searching for this code does not generate any good results.  I submitted a ticket (with the system log) but wanted to ask here.  Did a backup (SSD system drive + mechanical storage drive) and received a 'Failed to Open Backup' error twice.  The backup is over 2TB so not quick to do over and over to test.

Really concerned, as it looks like I have a corrupt, unusable backup.  I deleted my 'good' Acronos 2018 backup to do this one and I am really upset I am left with something unusable.  Any idea what is causing this?

I would love to be able to open the backup to validate my files are actually there and this is not a corrupt file.  Is that a realistic request?

And don't get any ideas...I am a photographer hence the large image collection ;)

Thanks!

Kenneth, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but the screen images only confirm that you hit an issue, but don't help in telling what it is or what might have caused it.

I would recommend separating out your two disk drives and making backups of these using a task for each.  This will give you separate backup image files and will help isolate whether any issues on a specific disk drive is contributing to the error seen?

What is your destination backup drive for the backup?  (M: drive letter)

Are you using the Acronis Mobile Backup feature?  This uses the M: drive by default for storing backups from mobile phones.

The log files for the problem backup are needed to identify any further information for the error message.  These are found in C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Logs in the backup_worker and ti_demon folders.  If you want to upload any of these log files (or the containing folders) then please zip them first to preserve the original log file names so that they can be identified correctly.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

First, no idea on the Mobile Backup (as in, nothing I am doing with my phone, nothing I turned on/tried to use). I just installed the software on my PC and ran the backup.  The M drive is just what Windows picked by default I think (but not sure).  I have a few drives and a internal memory card reader with 4 slots, so the letters climb pretty quick.

I deleted my old backups off the external (M) drive, and selected just my system C drive (internal 512GB SSD) - so the .tib was for just this one drive.  The backup ran quickly, and once complete, same error (see screen shot).  I ran the Validate tool and...it said it was Valid!

What is going on?

Kenneth, once again the images only confirm that you are seeing a problem but without the log files for the backup task, I cannot tell you anything new.

If you are making a Disks & Partitions backup of your C: OS drive, then this should be creating a file using the new .tibx file extension, not using .tib.

Files & Folders backups in ATI 2020 still use .tib backup files but are of no value if you need to recover your Windows OS and applications - you need a Disk backup for that purpose.

Please try creating a Disks & Partitions backup of your C: OS SSD, and if you still see this issue, please collect an Acronis System Report zip file then share this via a cloud service such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive etc.  You can send me a private message with the link if you prefer not to share it in the forum directly.  The system report will capture all the log data to help me try to understand what is happening here?

Hi,

I am happy to create a Disks & Partitions backup - but how?  I don't see options in the backup screen.  If I am starting from here (see screenshot), what is my next step?

Click on the left side source panel and it will reveal further options.

What am I looking for?  I can't find anything that refers to Disks & Partitions, or enabling .tibx vs. .tib

I am happy to send a log, but should I be posting it on this open forum or sending directly to you? I don't know what sort of information is in there.

Thanks again!

Kenneth, the options are available when creating a new backup task.

  1. Click on + Add backup
  2. Give the backup a unique task name
  3. Click on the Source panel (shows the task name)
  4. Click on Disks & Partitions
  5. Select the correct source disk (and/or specific partitions)
  6. Click on the OK button.
  7. Click on the Destination panel (defaults to Acronis Cloud for me)
  8. Select where you want to store the backup.

For logs, they should be fine to upload to the forum in zip format, they don't contain any information that would be useful to anyone else.  For system report zip files, these will be too large to upload to the forum (max size only 3 MB), so if sharing this, send me a private message with a sharing link.

Trying it now...will report back shortly.  I was not doing the 'add backup' step, looks like it might have been trying to piggy-back off an old one from the 2019 software?  Anyway, I will report back with what happens with your instructions above.

Thanks!

OK good news.  I ran it as you described, and as soon as it finished, I navigated to the M: drive, the only file was the one I just created, double-clicked, and was able to open it, navigate thru it just like normal.

The one I just created has the '7 31' name (that is the good file that worked), can you explain what the other two items are (attachment), and if they should be removed?  I'm thinking when I was running the backup before, it was trying to attach them to something that was no longer there.  I am starting from scratch and want to clean everything up.

Thanks for the help!

Click on the caret 'v' to the right of the unwanted task names, then on the Delete option from the drop-down menu shown.  If you don't want the files too, then select to delete everything otherwise just the task configuration is deleted.
