Installing ATI 2021 over ATI 2020 with Avast Antivirus

Thread needs solution

I installed ATI 2021 over my existing ATI 2020. This is a system using Avast Free Antivirus.

Here is what I see in the Protection area:
Status: Your PC is protected.
In Active Protection block:
Ransomware attacks has a green shield
Illicit cryptomining has a green shield
Malicious files and Malicious websites both have a blue i (info) for the message "Currently the antimalware protection is performed by the following software: Avast Antivirus. To avoid compatibility issues and to enable complete protection of your system with True Image, uninstall this software and enable protection.

The Protection Activity page shows three activities performed during the installation (first to last):
Real-time protection was turned on
Web filtering protection was turned on
Antiransomeware Protection was turned on
The settings page shows each of these items turned on as the activity reflects.

The latest version of Avast that I am running contains a Web Shield and a Ransomware Shield which are both on.

I am confused about what ATI is telling me, particularly about the Malicious files and Malicious websites indicators. ATI does recognize Avast, but has ATI taken a passive stance or is it taking an active stance while telling me (as an informative aside) that it may conflict with Avast?

Windows Security shows Avast Antivirus, but also shows No providers under Web protection.

One final thing... in the What's new in Acronis True Image 2021 page for Web Filtering, it says "Browse the web safely knowing sites that spread malware and suspicious files, host phishing attacks, or promote fake news are automatically blocked." Fake news? Really?

I also found that ATI 2021 Realtime protection was turned on by default with my Comodo Internet Security after upgrading.  I turned it off again, back to how I had it in the Beta and of course it now nags that I am not fully protected!  This should always be a user choice not being pushed on users who don't understand the implications of having multiple security providers competing for resources and risking potential deadlock situations!

I've been playing around with ATI and Avast running together. So far, I have not encountered any problems. I can turn protection off and on and it seems to be OK. When off, I have not seen any nagging to turn it on. Steve, when do you see this?

I've also been looking at the Task Manager to see both how they are performing. A general observation is that True Image has about twice the number of services as Avast and is using close to twice as much memory. The top two on my list are
Acronis Cyber Protect Service    83.9 MB
Avast Software Analyser             54.4 MB

In terms of CPU usage, there is nothing excessive.

I've been looking with ATI Protection on and off and oddly not seeing a lot of difference in either memory or CPU (this is an idle system).

Even with protection off, I see the following tasks consistently popping up near the top of the list when sorting on CPU load. When watching this, the ATI user interface is not running.
Acronis Updater
Acronis True Image 2021
Acronis Agent Core
Acronis Task Manager

I'm now running an experiment. I stopped the Acronis Agent Core service. In doing so, the following tasks no longer show up under Task Manager:
Acronis Agent Core
Acronis Alert Manager Service
Acronis Cyber Protect Agent
Acronis Task Manager
Acronis Updater

I plan to let it run a while and see what may happen... to see if the rest of True Image works alright. Warning: I am not recommending this as a method to stop the protection functionality.

As shown in the image below:

"Not protected from malware" with the suggestion to "Turn on protection" even though the other panels in the image show that I have Comodo Internet Security providing protection that includes realtime prevention.  This is because I do not have ATI 2021 Realtime protection turned on!

The 'nag' is not as obvious as with the Beta but is still suggesting the PC is unprotected and wanting the user to have both the ATI realtime and third-party protection both active which is not recommended nor wanted.

OK, not really a "nag". I was thinking there was something popping up.

Perhaps it should say "Not protected from malware by us"

While looking into another issue raised elsewhere for an Event 17 Windows Security Center issue I found that my installation had the same issue.  In researching this I decided to turn off my third party antivirus to enable Windows Defender.  I then ran a Quick scan using Defender.  After the scan completed I turned on my party all again.

Now opening TI 2021 and looking at the Protection screen what I see has changed from what I saw after the initial installation and I believe it to be an accurate description of my system status.  Why I had to perform the above procedure I am unsure however, I am thinking it is related to how these competing security products register themselves in Windows.  Screenshot below for your reference.

EDIT:  On a whim I decided to Turn Off Protection by clicking the down arrow to the right of Pause Protection seen above.  This removed the information notification about my third party security application from the GUI.  Enabling protection again did not bring back the notification.  Note that the nag shown in Steve's screenshot does not appear.  For some reason it never has on my installation.  Again, I am thinking the result of the applications registration processes with Windows.

Bob, your screen shot is exactly like mine when I have protection turned on in both ATI and Avast.

When turned off, it says "Active Protection is turned off" and the four protection items are grayed.

If I turn on protection and then go to the settings and turn off Real-time protection, then I see what Steve is seeing.

I see the same as in Post 5 above, except that protection for "Microsoft Teams Injection Attacks" is Enabled - presumably only happens if that feature is installed. Suppose this is because I am using Office 365 for Business on my PCs.

My recollection is that at various times I had paused protection on the two PCs I looked at.

The notification about third party security application will appear again if you click on Malicious files or Malicious websites, which both are blue with an information icon.

To see Steve's nag message, turn on Active Protection, and then manually turn off Real-time protection from the settings page.

Bruno,

Thanks, I see how the triggers work now.  I see no degradation in system performance or excessive resource usage on this particular machine having both Real-time Protection and my third party app active at the same time which I am pleased with.  It is what I was hoping to see.  So I will keep both on unless I find conflict at some point.

As long as the apps can co-exist together without conflict I am a happy camper.  the few extra MB of ram usage means nothing to me.  If I had limited ram however that would be a concern for me so I understand that situation.

I am going to install 2021 on another of my machines to see how it runs on a different platform.  I truly expect similar results however.

Just did an in-place upgrade from Beta 2 and ended up with the configuration in Post 5 with, once again the addition of Microsoft Teams Injection Attacks" - not aware that Teams loaded on the Notebook.
