Backing up e-mails taking days!

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I set up a scheduled backup for my Outlook e-mails. The first time it took DAYS to finish it, but I thought the following incremental backups shouldn't take long once it did that.

Now, I am running the incremental backup. It has been hours, and the progress is still at 28%. What is worse is that it has been saying "Time remaining: 41 minutes" almost since it started! This was also true for the first backup, the estimated time was waaaaaay off.

If I simply copied my Outlook pst files to a backup location, it'd be done long ago. It'd probably be done even if I zipped them. So, what is True Image doing that is taking so long? The time is unacceptably long! I may use my money-back option, if this is (inefficiently that is) how Acronis does backups.

Thank you.

Gokhan,

There have been issues with Outlook backup in recent versions and with recent Outlook versions.

Of course, if you image your disk, you get a backup of Outlook files with it.

There are other (free) products that do a good job at backup up Outlook files by backing up only the file by slices of changes.

and will they be solved any time soon?

I do that, anyway. But since it takes ~24 hours, I run that once a month. The whole point of backing just emails would have been doing it faster, so that, I can run it every week at least.

Such as?

Thanks.

I use Genie Timeline 2.1 in addition to Acronis, because Acronis File Backup doesn't work. It provides a function similar to Acronis Continuous Backup, but for Outlook Files, it backs up only the blocks of the .PST file that have changed.
I have the Pro version because I need file encryption, but there is a free version that does what you need.
They have a trial http://www.genie9.com/free_products/free_timeline.aspx

On another note, the customer service of Genie Soft is outstanding.

Finally, although Genie Timeline Homeo and Pro provide bare metal disaster recovery, I don't trust it as much as an Acronis system image, but it works better than Microsoft System Restore (from my experience).

Marty,

One, you've just posted into a thread that is 5 years old - last post before yours was  2011-01-19 08:28, not likely to get much response here.

Two, you should post in a forum with your version for best support so that people with the same version can help you out.

Three, you gave no information about what you've setup - cloud backup I'm assuming?  Please post in the correct forum or at least create a new thread - this one was specifically for an outlook backup with a 5+ year old product.
