Validate the latest diverse backup version only

Thread needs solution

I have a backup job set up on a 6.7TB volume each week.  It is a partition-type backup configured as a “differential” backup and only doing small differential backups after the initial full backup occurred.  I have it optioned with with “Validate backup each time after it is completed” and sub-options of “Validate the latest diverse backup version only”.  I do not have it set with the other choice sub-option of “Validate entire backup”.  So why is it validating the entire 6.7TB backup, and not just the small differential it just backed up?

Scott,

Have a look at the link below to see all options available for validation.  Be advised that validation does not work on cloud based backup locations.

Thank you, but that link didn’t provide anything I didn’t already know or try.  I’m not performing cloud-based backups either.

Scott, quick question here, how are you determining that it is checking more than just the one most recent differential file?

Hello Steve,

The first full backup of 6.7TB took 12 hours to backup, and an additional 8 hours to validate.  All good.

The next differential backup of 3GB took 4 minutes to backup, but I had to cancel the “latest diverse backup” validation at four hours.  Not good.

I do want to say thanks to all of the volunteer forum participants here.  I think the support you are providing is very commendable.  I understand the challenges you are facing with the downturn in product quality you are helping to support.

Hi Scott, thanks for the kind words for the MVP's & other regular contributors in these forums!

Just two thoughts to consider:

There is a new log viewer tool that has now been made available by Acronis via the Community Tools KB page.  See the link in my signature for the MVP Assistant tool.  Try the new tool, especially if the backup is creating .tibx files where you should look at the backup_worker logs for when doing the latest diverse backup validation, to see if this has any mention of the other files in the same backup chain.

If there is evidence that more than the latest differential file is being validated, open a Support Case direct with Acronis for this, as this should not be happening if we are reading the information they have published about this change to validation in ATI 2021.

Sound advice, Steve.

Thank you,
Scott

Well, here is my last report.  I have not performed the log analysis that Steve suggested, nor will I be opening a support case.  I will give Acronis TI 2021 application programmers and support staff the chance to do their (over)due diligence and do this testing for themselves.

Situation:

Windows 7 x64

NTFS - Basic type GPT partitions (Not Dynamic)
Clean registry, (not upgrade of TI from previous version) install of TI 2021 using 30480 rev.
TIBX type backups

Validation option - “Validate the latest diverse backup version only”

Scheduled differential only partition type backups (after initial full backup)

initial 6.7TB backup required 7 hours to “Validate the latest diverse backup version only”.

Ran job again, creating the first differential of 34GB - “Validate the latest diverse backup version only” required the same 7 hours.

So, at least for this type of differential only partition-type backup, “Validate the latest diverse backup version only” option does not do what it’s titled/describes.

Hello Everyone,

I'm also experiencing the diverse backup/verify issue with differential backups.  Has anyone heard anything from Acronis on this?  I'll watch this forum post for further updates.

Thanks!

Randy, Acronis has released a new build #32010 today for ATI 2021 but there is no mention of any changes related to validation in the release notes for the new build!

Thanks Steve!  I'll keep watching this forum post for updates.  Let's hope Acronis fixes this in the next update.

I have the exact same problem where Acronis would seemingly validate the whole backup and not the latest diverse backup version only despite the correct settings.

Hence, it would fail to validate after every backup because it was just taking too long.

I believe this may be the issue:

https://kb.acronis.com/content/63516

"One of the main changes in this new backup format is that the .tibx format saves full and differential backup versions as separate files, while incremental backup versions are automatically merged into their base full backups."

I guess my only option is to change the backup to differential if I want it to validate the latest slice of backup each time...any thoughts?
