Deduplication

Thread needs solution

I posted this yesterday but my account doesn't list it and it doesn't show up in search.

I am trying to find documentation on the new ATI 2021 ATI. The product description shows it as having a new feature, deduplication, but I can't find it in the documentation.

I can only imagine that deduplication might apply to cloud backups wherein only changed data is backed up.  Deduplication has its roots in organizations where duplicate data exists on multiple machines and in such an environment only changed or new data is backed up.  The current Acronis Cloud storage works in such a manner.

For more on the subject check the link below:

Deduplication

Thanks for the quick responses. The section of deduplication pointed to by the link in the previous email is for Cyber Backup whereas I saw a reference in the update to ATI 2021which does not use the cloud. My experience with deduplicated backups has been very good. Surely if ATI has a "new" deduplication function they would explain somewhere what is done and what the improvement would be in various scenarios.

The wording is:

What’s new

  1. Faster backups and recoveries
  2. Data deduplication
  3. Enhanced anti-malware
  4. Tray Notification Center
  5. Custom power management

I've been disappointed with ATI changes and removal of functionality so I'm a bit dubious about what they mean.

BTW, sorry for the duplicate post

Richard,

I understand completely.  True deduplication in TI at this point is not available.  My point was that the Cloud backup is the closest thing to deduplication currently offered and may be what the offer is referring to.

I have advocated for deduplication in TI but thus far that has not been implemented for backup on a local basis.

Understood.

It shows up on the ATI Standard 2012 Upgrade option as a new feature:

https://www.acronis.com/en-us/personal/upgrade-backup/

It wouldn't surprise me at all if there is no feature. I have spoken to them before about the value of the feature and was told it was on the list of requested featured. I'd just like to know. I did ask Acronis - yawn.

Hello Richard,

as far as I know, the new .tibx archive has a in-built deduplication mechanism. Blocks that are similar to the ones that already present under the archive won’t be backed up.

Ekaterina, I would be worried if deduplication didn't back up blocks that were just 'similiar to the ones already present' rather than being identical to those already present!

Steve, an interesting semantic lesson here. The data should be identical, but the source location would be different. Therefore, perhaps similar is an adequate word to use.

Bruno, if I have the same picture in 3 different folders, then the actual files would be identical rather than similar, but if those 3 pictures were of the same subject captured with a time lapse, they would be similar not identical and I would want them included!

I think deduplication here needs more clarification.  The process refers to a scenario in which multiple computers all on the same network contain data which is identical.  These computers are all backed up to a central server which contains the deduplication software.  Data being backed up is compared across all existing data and when duplicated files are encountered the software creates meta data indicating the location of the existing data rather than backing up the data again.  This allows for faster backup and recovery will draw data from all locations across the network.

Can this technology be applied to a single machine?  The basic premise of the process should be doable and given the dependency which exists in tibx backups of disks I suspect this may be the case then for the new format.  Identical data is in this case the reality.
