Acronis True Image on Mac OS Big Sur

Thread needs solution

I received the following message when I opened Acronis True Image on my iMac:  “existing software on your system loaded a legacy system extension by Acronis which will be incompatible with a future version of macOS

Is this issue being addressed or have I missed an update?

David, welcome to these public User Forums.

What version & build of ATI do you have installed on your iMac - this should be seen on either the Account page or else in the Help information?

Was the current install of ATI an upgrade from an older version or a new clean install?

Thanks David, you have the latest version / build for 2020 so there shouldn't be any 'legacy system extension' being loaded unless it has been left over from a previous older version of ATI?

Is there any other information about what that legacy system extension might be?

Hi Steve,

what David is referring to is, that Apple will drop Legacy Kernel Extensions in Big Sur. That's a fact. When you start True Image 2020 in MacOS 10.25.x Catalina, you receive the warning message pictured below.

So, the concern is: Will True Image 2020 be Big Sur compatible? I didn't see any MacOS 11 or Big Sur compatibility notes in the current 2021 beta release notes as well.

Marc, thanks for the further information - I can only suggest that this be raised directly with Acronis for this question to get a definitive answer, especially with regards to ATI 2021.  I have only seen the user guide for the Windows 2021 beta version so don't know if there is anything written in the Mac manual that may touch on this in the System Requirements section?

Steve, I can't post here anymore? New Post went to OFF-TOPIC? Can you move it from there to here?

Sorry for stealing the thread.

Irv, only Ekaterina (forum moderator) can move posts between forums...!

To David,

About a month ago I discovered that Acronis True Image 2020 is not compatible with macOS 11 (Big Sur). I am running a beta copy. I had a lengthy correspondence with Technical Support, and the impression I got was that Acronis appeared to be blind sided by the new release coming up. This is even more surprising since Apple releases seed copies to developers to get their software updated in a timely fashion. Indeed, when you check around about some other backup apps, they are already macOS 11 compatible. – Acronis started out and made its excellent reputation in the Windows market. It's only last year, I believe, that they entered the mac market. I am afraid that they will lose customers, if they are either incapable or unwilling to keep their software updated. This is not the first time I have had trouble with companies that started out in the Windows market. Somehow they seem to think that mac is only an 'after thought,' and they get around to it when they feel like it, yet they charge the same price as Windows users. You can sense my frustration. I have been sitting here for a month without being able to backup. Daily I check whether an update is available.

Hello Everyone,

macOS 11 Big Sur support is planned for Update 1 of Acronis True Image 2021 https://kb.acronis.com/content/67087
This week we published a new build 30960 fixing the critical compatibility issues with the Beta versions of macOS Big Sur.

This updated version was released, but now Acronis True Image cannot be installed. Each download says the image is corrupt and moves it to trash. Now I can't even install the previous version.

Pretty sure Acronis 2020 is the last Acronis Product i was pay for. The „2020“ Product will Not Support the „2020“ OS from a Mayor vendor? Shame on you - is this a joke?

Will Look for a time Maschine Solution on raspi. Free & without such paid Updates.

After years of using and satisfy with the Programm,no it is enough, you are not able to suport us,just want our money.

MacOS Big Sur (version 11.0) is the successor to macOS Catalina (version 10.15). It was officially released to public on November 12, 2020.

99% of my OS X Apps and Programs updatet to Big Sur for free, that they are working proper.Exept Acronis,Bravo.

  • Acronis True Image 2021  - macOS 11 Big Sur support was added in Update 1 (Build 33610).
  • Acronis True Image 2020 does not support macOS 11 Big Sur.!!!!! Bullshit
  • Year by year paying what for?To use it for 5 months and then pay a full amount again.Shame.

Same... It's like an supscription instead of an buyed software. I feel cheated by acronis.

As alternative, you can search the web for "sparseimage timemachine" and i'm pretty sure you will find a free solution. I've switched back to this solution and it's free, works and the backup is also a bit smaller with a uninstalled acronis ;)

Hello Manuel

You are right, unbeliable how this company do,back to Time Machine and no more spend on this Prog.

I have updated to Acronis True Image 2021, I am running macOS 11, and Acronis is running well. The reason I switched to Acronis was that Time Machine was so unreliable. Before any of you think of going to Time Machine, check out the forums, and the legions of people who have had difficulties with this app. I don't know how often Time Machine found my backups "corrupted," and had to start all over again. Another issue to consider is that Apple no longer sells the 'Time Capsule,' they left the NAS market. Time Machine was specifically written to support their product. Now that Apple is no longer producing the 'Time Capsule,' I wonder whether they will have any interest in further developing and supporting 'Time Machine.'

I will also mention, that when I had initial difficulties with Acronis, the customer support was unparalleled. Prompt replies, and persistent communications asking whether things have worked out. They will not let you hanging, until you tell them to close the case. For this outstanding and reliable support, I don't mind paying a little extra.

Ekaterina, can you advise if you intend to provide an update to True Image 2020 to support Big Sur?  As expressed by others, there are a number of customers who have paid good money for a backup solution that will last for more than a few months.  What are the options for True Image 2020 customers?

Mark, welcome to these public User Forums.

Acronis webpage: Support Lifecycle of Consumer Products - shows that all mainstream support for ATI 2020 ended back on August 20th 2020 which normally means that no further builds will be provided unless Acronis deem there to be a critical vulnerability etc.

Perhaps one of the issues here is Big Sur was officially released after the end of support date for ATI 2020 and therefore wasn't listed in the 'Supported OS versions' for that version of ATI.

Acronis look to have focussed only on providing support for Big Sur in ATI 2021 as their current supported application version.

(Please don't shoot the messenger here!  I am just another user here and adding comments while waiting to see if Ekaterina provides any other information for you and the other Mac users raising concern over support for Big Sur in these forums!).

+ to @Steve Smith

Big Sur is version 11.0, and is a major revision to the OS code. System utility vendors such as Acronis have to draw the line somewhere when deciding to add support for a new OS to an out-of-support software version.

I understand what you are saying, but Acronis sold me True Image 2020 in July 2020. Ending support a month later, and obsolescence within 5 months seems a little harsh.  You may say “let the buyer beware” - which is true. It just depends on whether Acronis wants that buyer to keep returning, or move to another product feeling ripped off.

Mark, you may be able to get a free upgrade from ATI 2020 to 2021 if you qualify under the rules shown in KB 65495: How to upgrade to Acronis True Image 2021 where it states:

Acronis True Image has a standard 30 day before the new version release free upgrade policy. This means, you are eligible for free upgrade to Acronis True Image 2021 if you purchased Acronis True Image 2020 online or activated a boxed version after July 21, 2020.

Get your free upgrade here.

If you are within a few days of the above date, then it might be worth asking if Acronis will extend the free upgrade offer to you?

This "Free Upgrade Check" works as like shit as Acronis 2020 on Big Sur works like shit.

I just get an errormessage: "We could not check your upgrade eligibility. Click here to send a request to Acronis Customer Central. You will be asked to provide a digital copy of your purchase confirmation."

With a click it does not send a message to the support. Noooooo, that would be to easy. It opens a support center where i must select something. And > NO option for "upgrade process is not working".

Thanks Steve.  Wouldn't you know it - I purchased my copy 6 days too soon to be covered (15 July).  But I'll try your suggestion and contact Acronis.  Thanks for the information.

I am experiencing kernel panic crash on Mac big sur which is not beta version(11.X). Recently upgraded to Acronis to Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office since support suggested to do so and still Mac is crashing continuously specially when i run backup.Reported to Support and seems to be support is not really helpful. Without proper investigation, support said its not issue from Acronis. Now i have uninstalled Acronis completely from Mac and seems to be issue disappeared. To be honest past 10 years I have very bad experience with Acronis since then, i never thought Acronis is a good option for Windows and Mac. As everyone said in above post,"WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY".  Only reason i went for Acronis is fact that Acronis support Thunderbolt device which is connected to MAC. Or else i would never purchased Acronis. But Thunderbolt connection device backup did not go very well :(
