Thread needs solution

I'm getting the above error when trying to backup my local drive to an USB External drive. Here's the full entry from the log:

Machine is running Win XP Pro SP3, Acronis True Image Home 2009.

Any ideas?

You mention the full entry from the log??

Under, My Computer (right click), Manage, Storage, Disk Management: what type of volume is your USB disk? Basic disk, NTFS primary partion?

Sorry, don't know why it didn't take when I pasted it. Here it is:

event code="3" id="13" level="4" message="Error writing the file. (0x40003)
function = "WriteFileNoCache"
Tag = 0x7CEB2CDC9FB12189

USB drive is NTFS.

Is your disk set up as a removale media (write caching disabled)?
If yes, do you have the same issue if you change the USB port?
If yes, can you try with another disk (even with a flash drive and a smaller backup)? Do you have the same issue then?
If yes, I am running out of ideas... otherwise your issue is specific to your drive. Ty to run chkdsk /r on the disk, uninstall/install the device on another port.

It is setup as removable media. Should I change that?

Haven't tried a diff USB port. I do have another identical External HDD I could test it on.

Do you have any card readers or external USB hubs attached?

Have you tried using a different USB port? If possible try one that is directly attached to the motherboard, normally a rear connection.

There's a USB hub and in fact, the external USB drive is connected to it. I'm just a little mystified because that didn't seem to be a problem until recently though, but in any case, I'll try to switch to rear USB port next after trying with write cache enabled if the error persists.
