First time I need to restore my backup and massive FAIL - what to do?

A backup that hasn't been implemented ISN'T a backup - how true!  I backed up my data to an external hard drive. Today I needed to retrieve that data and get it onto a different PC I'd rebuilt with a fresh install of Windows 10. I downloaded and installed Acronis onto the fresh PC but when opened I can no way of browsing to the .tibx files on the external hard drive (now switched to the fresh PC.)

I tried the 'Mount' option available by right-clicking the .tibx file in the external hard drive in Windows Explorer and I seem to have ended up partitioning the C drive in the fresh PC and creating a new drive with a separate drive letter (although my data IS present within the new partition.)

Is this the only way I could retrieve my data? I didn't want a partitioned C drive. I can find no advice in the application's Help link.

I appreciate I've done things the wrong way somehow but I couldn't find any instructions on how to retrieve data in these circumstances.

Martesen, everything you say seems to make sense except when you say you ended up partitioning the C drive. That should not have happened when you did the Mount. Yes, you would see a new drive letter which is the backup. You should be able to easily unmount that drive.

For True image on the fresh PC, at the bottom of the screen where it say Add Backup, click on the down arrow to the right of that to expose the Add existing backup command. That should allow you to access your .tibx file within True Image.

You should also be able to simply double click on the .tibx file in Windows Explorer and it should open up the .tibx in a new Explorer windows from which you could copy files.

You're right about the 'partitioning' I expect - I hadn't actually looked into Storage Management to check - I just misinterpreted the new drive letter as a partition. I subsequently ran a 'Restore  (to previous) point' to get back to where I was prior to starting and the new drive and contents have gone.

I have subsequently repopulated the C drive with the required data using a (more simple!) syncronisation application.

But I have now tried your tip about opening the 'Add Backup' drop-down and did manage to add the previous backup .tibx files to the Acronis dashboard.

So you have restored my confidence in being able to actually implement a restoration of data should I need it in the future, for which many thanks!

Additionally, if a backup file of a complete disk contains 4 partitions, all 4 partitions will be assigned a drive letter and appear in Windows Explorer.  Like Bruno says these can be unmounted by right clicking on them and selecting Unmount.

If you want to retrieve files from the backup then open the backup location in Explorer then double click on the backup file to open it.  You can then double click on the partition where your files are to open it and continue this process until you locate your files.  You can then copy/paste them to a new location.

Enchantech - sorry, more numpty questions - re. your first paragraph, presumably this refers to the 'Mount' process specifically, rather than a full restore from backup?
