Forum Suggestion - spell check and auto formatting

Thread needs solution

In most forums I use they have auto spell checking and formatting. It would be super nice if this was added to the Acronis forums.

Hm maybe it is because I'm using Safari for Windows (which has a built in spill chucker which sulks at non US spelling; never mind. :) ) but on one post here I did get a pop up telling me  an updated FCKEditor spell checker was available, which I thought belonged to this forum, but it could be the one used by Safari.

I use Fire Fox and unless there is a plug-in I don't see a spell checker. I'm also running on a backup PC and a LOT of my tools are not installed on this system.

John, the spell checker is the part of text editor. Please check the screenshot:

I don't see your image but I see the spell-checker icon in the editor and it works. It would be super if there was an auto-spell-checker as well. I've seen auto-spell-checkers in a lot of forums.

Hello John,

I've fixed the image in my previous message.

I would check how automatic spell checking can be done, however at this moment I'm not sure if it can be implemented fast.

Thanks,

Hello all,

We have implemented the Spell Check As You Type - SCAYT - spell checking for this Forums. It is getting activated automatically and highlights the words as you type them in:

Thanks

AndyB,

Okay. Now can we have an option to completely disable the SCAYT option? I can turn it off, but it's back on again when the editor reloads.

This is my problem: When working on a post, I often type and then scroll back up the thread to reread or check something. With SCAYT enabled, it will do its check and jump the page all the way back to the bottom. The forces me to scroll back up and find my place again. Very irritating.

An option in the user account settings would be nice. Then I could have it disabled by default and enable it when I want to use it.

It may be my imagination, but  the forum has been noticeably slower ever since the SCAYT option was added. If that's true then it would be better to make SCAYT default to OFF, and let those who use it choose to turn it ON.

I've noticed that it's been slower too. There's probably other changes being made, but I agree about SCAYT. If I switch IE8 between normal and compatibility mode or even just refresh the page, the editor seems lag behind. They know this already, but the editor is broken with IE8 in normal mode (SCAYT was one of the new features).

If they ever get the thread markers feature, it'll probably slow down the forum so much that it won't be usable. I've been looking some for a client-side solution since I doubt a workable solution will be soon, coming from Acronis.

I also have noticed the recent slow down. As many of you know, I have noticed that the thread will appear and have a window ready for me to input comments but the editor and all its icons, etc is missing. Often times,  have to wait  a minute or so before the editor appears. The editor load time is inconsistent. Sometimes it appears without delay and other times the delay can be quite long. The forum seems faster at night.

Most of my responses are pre-typed off line and I just paste them in. Firefox 3.5 is my main browser but I also use SeaMonkey and IE8. The load time is about the same in all 3.

Spell check anywhere is a program which will spell check almost anywhere. I do not  know the current cost.

The forum speed is much improved when you are NOT actually logged in and just viewing.

That is a very good observation and an important clue. When you're not logged in the editor does not load on every post that you open and the forum responsiveness is much better.

Hello all,

Thank you for the feedback, this is invaluable input.

Ok, you have your arguments and they are quite reasonable. We changed the SCAYT behavior so it doesn't load automatically and allowed Firefox Spell Checker to be active in the editor window.

As for the speed difference for the anonymous users - that is definitely true cause the caching techniques for anonymous users are the most effective ones. And once you become logged in - there are many different user-specific settings in play that just can't be effectively cached. Anyway, we will be looking into performance piece constantly and get it better and better over time.

Editor speed - currently we are using the FCKeditor which is the good and reasonable choice among WYSIWYG editors. It is rather lightweight and feature rich. Over time we will be migrating to the CKeditor 3 which is the new rewritten version of the FCKeditor and should perform much faster. Another option would be to use much more lightweight editor (with less features, that are questionable and not usable) for Forum topics - this option is also investigated and you (our customers and active forum users) will be the first to see the difference.

Stay tuned!

Hello all,

After thinking a bit further - we have disabled the rich text editor loading by default. So it should improve the page loading time and should be enough to post the fast reply. If you need the rich-text editing options then you can get it activated using the "Switch to rich text editor" link under the comment window.

Hope you'll like this - let us know if we can improve it further.

Thanks

Andy:

I think the change to disable the rich text editor loading by default is better, at least when viewing the forum with Firefox.

With IE8, the rich text editor does not load, and there appear to be two comment boxes for posting comments instead of one. Here is the error text produced by IE8:

***Edit***
Sorry; I guess this is a known issue. When switching IE8 to compatibility mode, the rich text editor works correctly and the duplicate comment box disappears.

Hello all!

We have fixed the Internet Explorer 8 issue with not working in the normal mode - it should all be fine now.

Thanks

AndyB,

Is the Preview function broken now? When I try to preview a post, it just loads the standard editor and there's no preview. Note that the standard editor loads again even if you've been using the rich text editor. I'm using IE8.

Andy, Speaking of page loading speed. In my opinion, the "Acronis Discussion Forum" link button(image below) should be removed and replaced by additional button links pointing to the each of the individual forums. Or have direct links to the main three forums. Being forced to return to the main menu and having to select another forum is a needless waste of a page loading and system resources. When a reply or viewing has been completed, the user should be able to select a direct link to their next forum. It's just a matter of convenience and time savings and reduced page loads. The link below shows that this can be accomplished with very little space using either buttons or tables. This illustration does not have to be used and is just a starter suggestion so you can barnstorm your own ideas for implementation. Thanks for the past and ongoing improvements to the forum!
