TI 2010 no longer sees second drive.

Thread needs solution

Months ago (closer to a year I think) I demoed TI 2010 for a friend using my boot CD. I selected his second, one partition drive, and created a backup image. All went well.
He has finally decided to take the plunge, but wanted to see a little more about TI’s restore ability.
Now, when I boot to the CD, the second HD is not found by TI. Windows sees it fine and it functions as expected. In desperation I installed TI to see what would happen when running from Windows.

TI sees the drive, folders and files when selecting a data/files backup, but not when selecting a disk/partition backup. I’ve read that it could be an MBR problem, which must have occurred after I ran the demo backup.

I also installed the free version of Macrium Reflect which sees the drive, but not the partition. So I'm sure it's a problem with the drive.

Is there any way to correct this other than to reinitialize which, as I understand it, will cause a loss of all data?

TIA

Can you post a picture of the windows disk management console?
What type of disk is the missing disk? It should be basic.
What type of partition is missing? NTFS? FAT32?

Running a chkdsk -r or /r (XP) could resolve issues.

I'll see what I can do.
This is a non-internet connected PC used only for digital recording (Pro Tools).
Because of the large amount of studio session data on the drive I'm a little nervous about doing anything until I can get a good back up of some kind. I was able to run a backup using the Windows app, but it took over 2 hours and I haven't been able to verify that it's any good yet.
AFAIK, it's just a basic one partition NTFS drive.

And you confirm this is a basic disk, not dynamic?

What buld of TO 2010 are you using?

You may want to login to your account at acronis.com and download the latest bootable media for 2010. It will have more drivers than the one created within TI 2010

Build 7046. I'm using the same CD I used to create an image of the drive earlier.
Same CD, same PC (no hardware/software changes).

Have you changwd any BIOS Settings?

Nothing has been deliberately changed. The PC owner would not even know how to get to the BIOS and would consult me before doing anything out of the ordinary.

I am running out of ideas.
Here what I suggest:
- borrow the drive and see if you can see it properly on another computer. That will confirm this is the drive and not the computer. This will probably confirm this is the drive, from what you describe.
- try another connection if available: usb versus 1394, for example.
- if not available or if this doesn't solve it, run a chkdsk -r, there is no other safe way to troubleshoot disk issues.

After that, you have to try to salvage the files from the disk...

Unfortunately, I have to agree with Pat L>

According to the KB, if TI sees the drive, folders and files when selecting a data/files backup, but not when selecting a disk/partition backup it could be an MBR problem. The article suggests that you reinitialize the disk.
Any way to fix the MBR without the lose of data?

Try EasyBCD 2.0. http://neosmart.net/blog/2010/welcome-to-easybcd-2/. It has the capability to write new MBR.
