Startup recovery manager

Thread needs solution

Can anyone tell me how to set up the keyboard as UK rather than US.. Hover over it and it says press ctrl+shift. This does nothing. Any ideas as entering my wifi password is a fruitless affair with all the characters in it!!!

Darren, I have to say that I stopped using the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager (gives F11 on boot).  ASRM is using a small limited Linux kernel OS that doesn't contain support if using RAID or BitLocker etc.

The approach that I use is essentially based on the approach that Macrium Reflect uses in adding an extra entry to the Windows Boot Manager to boot from the 'Simple' version of the Acronis WinRE rescue media, which has the correct keyboard localisation, device drivers etc.

To do this, I followed the steps below:

Use the option to create the ATI 2020 'simple' rescue media as a .WIM file (for UEFI boot systems or as a .ISO file for Legacy).

Save the .WIM or .ISO file to a new folder such as C:\Acronis

Download and install a copy of the free EasyBCD application which will be used to add the menu entry to the BCD file used by the Windows Boot Manager.

Launch EasyBCD (ignore the warning for UEFI systems).

Use the option to 'Add new entry' and click on the WinPE tab for .WIM files or ISO tab.
Give the entry an appropriate Name, then in the Path box navigate to where the .WIM (or ISO) file is saved, then click on the Save button (+) to save the new entry.  A brief confirmation message will show in the bottom status bar.

Click on the Edit Boot Menu option to see the new entry and adjust the ordering if needed.

At this point, when you restart Windows, you will now have an extra option to boot from the Acronis media.  Note: set the 'Count down' value to allow enough time to see the option before continuing to boot into Windows.  I set 5 seconds for this.

Thanks for your very informative reply. Quick question though. If your windows instalation is screwed and you need to recover the c drive does the fact you have booted from it prevent recovery or if you are recovering the whole disk for example. I will give this  a run on one.of my  machines though thanks

Update.. easybcd itself is.indeed easy. However the boot menu seems to have no timer and my laptop does not shutdown :-( I shall persevere though. The acronis image is better but has no.wifi drivers so I cannot look get.to my backups on my nas.

Darren, if your C: drive fails then both ASRM and the method above won't work as the files for both are on the C: drive, so you would need to boot from the Acronis Rescue Media as is needed for a bare-metal recovery.
