Full Backup taking a long time.

Thread needs solution

I have a full backup of my C Drive (475Gb used) scheduled for every Sunday. This normally takes 3-4 hours. However, the last 2 backups have taken about 18 hours, and todays  has been running for 10 hours and is only 80% complete.

Can anyone suggest a reason for this?

Colin, welcome to these User Forums.

Sorry but more information is needed to try to understand why your backup is now taking much longer than expected?

Please download the MVP Log Viewer tool (from the Community Tools link in my signature) and use this to view the log file contents for your backup task, this should give more light on this issue.

I would also suggest doing a CHKDSK /F for each of your disk drives involved in the backup, including both those used as Source and Destination.  It is possible that errors are being encountered here?

Colin, thanks for the screen image of the log, this does not show any errors but does show that you are doing a disk & partitions backup and was creating a full backup image, though no obvious reason why this took over 12 hours to reach completion.

The majority of the time looks to be taken for one partition out of the 5 included in the backup, which is also likely to be the largest one.

The main reasons why this may be happening / taking so long, are if there are other active processes on your computer, i.e. such as Windows doing a critical update or upgrading to a new build, or if there is significant disk fragmentation (which should normally be handled by the Windows Maintenance background task if this is Windows 10), or if there are any errors related to bad sectors (but which there is no indication of in the log content).

I would recommend doing a CHKDSK /F on your main OS partition in case there are any filesystem issues.

I would also recommend downloading / using the free Acronis VSS Doctor tool (link in my signature) to check that there are no VSS issues involved here - VSS is used to create a snapshot of your OS files & programs for your backup.

One other thought would be if your drive here was running short on free space which could impact on performance.

Steve,

Thanks for your help; I downloaded the VSS Doctor tool, which found an anomaly and fixed it.

Back to normal now. Thanks again.

Colin, glad that the VSS Doctor tool was able to find / fix the issue here.  Thanks for giving feedback.

Hi, everyone!

I read the problem was solved with VSS Doctor, but I think 3-4 hours for a 475 GB disk is a lot. I recently had a similar situation trying to backup about 120 GB. I finally realized that I was trying to backup on a disk that had the compressing option activated. I changed the destination disk and everything was just fine. It was finished in less than an hour.

Florin, welcome to these public User Forums.

Thank you for sharing your comments about backing up to a disk with compression enabled - that would increase the backup time as the data is being compressed twice, once by Acronis and again by Windows!

The problem was the backup wouldn't succeed on a disk with compression enabled. It took more than 24 hours and in the end the message was the backup wasn't succesful. I used a bootable Acronis True Image.

I am having the same issues with 20 hours to backup a server with a raid-1 300GB and a raid-5 500gb setup in bios on a Dell R710. It used to take about  40 - 50 minutes. I am booting to the 11.5 bootable media to perform a manual backup. No windows etc involved. I do not have verification, normal compression, no sector by sector backup. These are physical servers, no VM. Using same disks and backup drives as before.

Ideas?

Thanks,

Daren

Daren, please confirm the product and build you are using. You mention 11.5, and have posted in the ATI 2017 forum.
