Image corrupted

Thread needs solution

Hi. I've had a Windows update go bad (no surprises) and my easiest solution is to reimage. When I try either via the app or a USB drive, I get "image corrupted". If I try to create a new image (to save what I can), I get the same message. So my questions are, "Is the image recoverable" and "why can't I create a new one".

Cheers

Dayle, difficult to guess at why your images might be corrupt based on just the brief information given above.

When exactly are you seeing the message that the image is corrupt?  If you are seeing this error when creating a new backup then that is very different than being told an image being recovered is corrupt?

Are you using ATI 2021 as per this forum, or a different version of ATI?

Hi Steve. The image was 2 months old and the lap top is not much older. I'm using 2021 which simply had a red cross through the "Backup" page for that backup and a corrupt message in the lower status section. I can't really say if the backup was corrupted when it was compiled as I never checked it (stored on a NAS). Having said all that, it would be great if ATI had an easier means to find out what the problem is. Mind you, if Microsoft force us to take updates, they need to be a bit more confident in their product.

The upshot is that I decided to reset the PC (being new, there wasn't a lot of content fortunately) and add a key to the registry to create manual updates only, which, by my reckoning, gives me a chance to back up before I update, to save this pain (this is the third time it's happen to me on 3 different PC's but ATI has saved me prior to this).

Thanks for responding. Cheers

I had a similar problem (cannot remember how it came about). My recollection is that I did the following to fix the issue:

  1. Removed the backup from ATI (but did not delete the backup)
  2. I copied the whole backup chain to another disk.
  3. Added the backup in new location into ATI
  4. Did a manual cleanup of the backup - removed the last incremental backup
  5. Validated the backup - this can take some time

This may not work for you (that is why I recommend working on a copy of the backup).

If you do this using the recovery media, create the copy of the backup before using the recovery media, than do cleanup followed by validation. [Not sure if you can do a cleanup when using the recovery - not something I have ever needed to consider doing.]

Ian

Thanks Ian

The latest is I created a backup (file) after the reset (which was fine) then started adding the apps that had been deleted after the reset. I tried to backup today and after I started it, it now shows "corrupted". There is a chance the laptop went to sleep during the backup so I'm not ruling that out as the problem. However the major issue is I can no longer create a backup, or modify the options, as it reports "The file is corrupted" on the message line. I've been using the NAS (and others) for backups for 10 PC's so it's not the issue. The plan now is I'm going to delete the backup (format) and the file, then start from scratch. I'll report back. BTW, I contacted ATI via chat which was fruitless, in fact I'm not sure why they give you a case number.

I remain hopeful.

Not the best news. As other PC are still successfully backing up to the NAS it suggests to me that the problem is at the PC side of the process. Check the settings for the power settings NIC or wifi adapter.

May I ask the brand of NAS you are using? I have been getting corrupt backups as well, and I am trying to narrow down potential causes. I am running a Netgear ReadyNAS 214 with the latest FW, wired LAN from PC to NAS through a Netgear Nighthawk RAX80 on the latest FW, but the PC is running Windows 11 Insider, 22000.160.

I deleted and recreated my backup, and it worked fine for a few days and then corrupted. I am leaning toward rolling back to Windows 10 21H1, but want to make sure someone else out there isn't seeing the same thing.

Synology DS414 NAS 4 x 4TB WD Red HDD (as indicated in my signature). That model is ancient and superseded several times.

John, all Beta / Insiders builds of Windows are not supported by any current version of ATI by Acronis and there have been no new builds provided with such support to date.

See KB 60589: Acronis True Image: Windows Insider Program (beta) builds support for the official statement.

Like Ian, I also have an older Synology NAS - mine is a DS215j with 2 x 3TB WD NAS drives and have not see this type of issue. I backup over a mix of Ethernet cable (desktop PC's) and WiFi for laptops.

Thanks guys for the info.

I definitely understand the lack of support for Insider builds, but my entire motivation for being in the Insider program is to test applications with the new builds and provide feedback to developers.

In this case, my backup seems to be corrupting only after a few runs, no matter what backup scheme I run. I have tried Incremental, which is my preference, and Full. Both completed for a few days, then corrupted. I can delete the backup and recreate it, and it will run for a few days before corrupting.

Sounds like this is not specific to the NAS being used. I will keep my failsafe backup for the time being until Windows 11 goes into GA and Acronis supports it - just wanted to get feedback and try to narrow down the issue.

Thanks,

John

There may be something in one of the logs that will help you work out what the problem is - you will need MVP Assistant, available on Community Tools. The tool is discussed in this forum thread.

Not sure if it would be appreciated, but you could use the feedback tool to upload a system report, make it clear that you are providing the information to assist Acronis engineers in getting ATI ready for Windows 10, which is scheduled for rolling roll-out from October.
