Recover "My Documents" to new computer

Thread needs solution

Can anyone tell me how to recover or copy files and folders like "My Documents" from an external hd backup to a new computer with a different operating system.

Thanks.

You can install TI on the new computer. Attach the external hard drive and navigate to the backup file. Right click and select explore or mount (depends on your version of TI). Locate your My Documents folder. The location depends on your OS. You could also boot from the rescue CD on the new machine and follow the same steps.

In addition to what thomasjk wrote above, you do have several options.

From your new computer, if you have TrueImage installed or use your TI Rescue CD. Use the Restore files and folder mode and restore individual folders from the external backup to a folder of your choice.

Or from the installed version, you can right click on the backup file and choose the Explore option or choose the Archive folder and choose the mount or recover option from there. Using either the explore or mount option, you can drag and drop the folders to where you choose.

You can also do a file (mydata) backup and restore with the settings set to restore to diff location and then specify where you want the files to be restored (written). You can also specify whether existing files on the target wih the same get get overwrritten always, never or when older.

I just tried to mount an image of an Win xP system from an external hard disk to a netbook running Win 7 starter and TI netbook edition, and I got "backup doesn't exist or is faulty". Later on the old computer with xP could be started, and I could mount and use the very same image mentioned above quite easily. Question: What was my mistake?
