Backup file getting deleted after a failure!
I have True Image Home 2010, build 7160 running on Windows XP.
I am backing up a directory on a Western Digital Mybook World Edition using file backup mode.
The backup file is getting stored on a USB drive.
When the backup is started, I can see the backup files being created, however, after several hours of backup, when a file with a spyware or virus is being copied, my virusscanner locks the file and causes an error in True Image. The error causes True Image to delete all the backup files. I've made a smaller backup test just so I can figure out what is happening. It seems if the backup is run without silent mode, a prompt will appear to ignore or cancel. If no button is pressed, it seems the default is to cancel, which then seems to delete the backup files. I clicked on the silent mode and tried it again. This time, it seemed to work and keep the backup files.
I switched to my large backup and enabled silent mode. After several hours the backup failed again and to my surprise it still deleted the backup files. I'm at a lost. I can't keep looking for files that may have a virus or spyware (some are just false alarms which for some reason, the rogers online protection is picking up). I don't mind having a few files not being backed up because of errors, but I cannot have any backups at all, especially after its been running for several hours actually creating the backups.
Is there anything else I can do to make this work? I upgraded to build 7160 hoping the problem would go away, but its still there?
This is the first time I'm doing a file backup, as now I have my files on a NAS.

Hi Scott,
I looked around the settings. It doesn't look like there's any way to make it ignore ATI. Its really any kind of access by any software that's tripping the virus scanner. I can probably disable the scanner all together, but it doesn't answer why ATI is deleting the backup when it encounters an error.

Bernard,
I think you'd need the scanner to ignore the folder you are backing up rather than tell it to ignore TI.
TI might not be deleting the backup per se, have a look in your temporary folder (Win Button + 'r', type in %temp%) and see if there are parts of the backup hidden here. If TI thinks the disk lacks integrity it will abort the task, removing whatever it has managed to perform so far.

Hi Colin,
The scanner only has folder selection options for a scheduled scan. Otherwise, it always scans on file access, unless its disabled completely.
I checked the temporary folder but there are no backup files there, nothing hidden as well. Also, its on my C drive which is relatively small, it wouldn't even fit one of the backup files (split into DVD size files).

Hi Guys,
I asked Acronis support about this but all I get is a response that doesn't seem to be related to my question. They keep telling me to purchase the per incident support, which I probably would if they actually understood my question. The response I get is:
> You have mentioned that while backing up files with the Silent mode
> feature, it creates the backup without the error
> message, however, it gives the error when the silent mode is disabled, we
> have understood your question and will assist you.
>
> This feature is mainly designed for unattended backups when you cannot
> control the bacup process. You can enable this setting to ignore errors
> during backup operations. In this mode no notification will be displayed if
> errors occur during backup. You may use this option when configuring a backup
> task to be run during the night.
To which I responded:
"I think you missed the bottom portion of my notes.
I understand that the silent mode is supposed to ignore errors for
unattended backup, however, for some reason, when I do my full backup using
file backup mode and in silent mode, it doesn't ignore the errors. The error
causes True Image to delete my backup files, wasting all the time it just
spent doing the backups."
To which Acronis' response is:
"I understand the issue, however, Full backup and file backups are two different backups. With Full backup you can create Disc backup and with File backup only files and folders are backed up."
-----------
Anyways, this is where I just gave up. When I say "full", I meant not "incremental". Full backup is an option in file backup mode, but the support person doesn't even know this and I had to explain this, so why the heck would I pay for support when I have to tell him what it is? And what does he mean? Does it mean that file backup is not in True Image's capability?
I am now using 7-zip, which does essentially the same thing as file backup, but it actually works and doesn't delete the backup files. Its also free. Maybe I'll wait for an update for True Image 2010 and hopefully it will get fixed. It's not too promising though when their support doesn't even understand the problem. I don't want to upgrade to 2011 if file backup won't work.
Just frustrating.

Bernard,
There won't be any further updates to TI2010, b7160 was the last.
Have you run the checkdsk /r on the drive?
If you make a file backup task with just a few in it, does the same thing happen? If you have another internal partition you could make a small image to, it would be worthwhile knowing if the same probem occurs

Putatively, ATI2011 was the "update" to ati2010. Only twice in a half dozen years have I sen acronis issue an update for a version that has been surpassed/replaced. Each time Acronis had announced ahead of time that it would issue another build. so anticipating a new build of ati2010 is probably wishful at best.
ATI2010 was a refinement of ati2009, which was a sharp departure from the prior versions ati10 and ati11, employing a database instead of using task-specificiation files in target backup directories. ati2011 was a further refinement with lots of added stuff folks had been asking for but the interface remains a mixed bag for many folks. so it will be interesting to see what the annual new-version-release in the fall presents.

Yes, the chkdsk shows the destination drive is clean. The source drive is on a NAS.

Bernard,
In youir first post in this thread you mentioned the backup drive is USB, and in post #8 you say the source drive is a NAS, is this correct?
